What is your favourite part of antique dealing

I have just been asked this question

What is your favourite part of antique dealing Vanny - just by way of interest...

    My Answer

When you buy an item in a house at 8pm and load it into the van on a night that the heavens have opened...fish and chips on the way back and arrive home after midnight. The next day you take the item 50 miles to the restorers. A month later you return and collect the item, rap it and pack it into a container. Six weeks later the items arrives on another continent. You unload and unpack and arrange and display it in your shop window. A lady customer looks at the item, falls in love with it, buys it. You now re rap it and pack it into your van. You drive 150 miles and deliver it to a very happy Mrs Carter in a large mansion who writes you a check. She introduces you to her husband, "this is Johnny (Cash ) my husband.

The next day you deposit the cheque into the bank and 5 days later you start the whole process over again.

    Walking the line.

I met June Carter Cash and Johnny my times. They loved antiques.

May they both rest in peace.

If you can't beat them join them ey Vanny?

"Not really my cup of tea . . . Prefer items with a bit of age.

But saying that they definitely should appeal to some. They are commercial scenes / subjects, but as Briana says. These could be purchased from any source and could give the same effect. Dare I say 21st Century Chinese School art works are of good quality, but are produced so rapidly and of in such high numbers that it makes them virtually worthless.

This is a different matter as I am sure it is a good oil, painted by one good hand! I think if you wanted to purchase these they would purely be to put on the wall - or even to try and sell at retail. However, not everything is about the money, and could the oil painting could be placed anywhere to make any shop look more attractive, as they should appeal to a lot!

I think my opinion of why I like antique dealing so greatly is trying to find and acquire a new art work, which I feel can make a profit. Yes, it is hugely exciting when you find a right work which makes a decent profit, but of course if it was always like this I suppose everybody do it! Then it is off to source the next piece. It can of course get frustrating at times and anxious times can arise, but as long as the goods outweigh the bads it is all OK."

It will be interesting to see what other posts have to say as well.

I enjoy most parts of the antiques trade.

    -going to auctions

-handling items that are true craftmanship, instead of mass produced items.

    -the chase i find addictive

i also find that i am surrounded by people that are interesting.

i am 29 years old an i found out at quite a young age that i was more of a complex person .

most of my freinds have very simple needs , drinking , football/music, clothes, food and there happy.

sometimes i wish i could be more easily satisfied, but i need to be busy all the time and have a wide range of interested which include - antiques, psycology, philosophy, football, music ect ect ect

i find that i have a constant drive for learning and thats why i realise that the antiques industry is for me.

so after all that the answer is . 'it feeds my drive for learning'

    No, no, no.

Not everything is about the Fish & Chips Vanny.

In all honesty, another reason why antiques are so fascinating and adored by many today I am sure is down to the fact that these items were being produced 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 etc. years a go. Some craftsmen has created the item from tools, initiative and talent. It is just quite happy to think that they were enjoyed in the makers life time and can be adored for a long time after this.

One example of a sort of sad story was the life of: Vincent Van Gogh, who through out his life time his art works were the laughing stock of the art world, this could be down to many reasons, but now times have changed, unusual art works are now being more appreciated due to their quirkiness. Now years after his death his works are adored by a huge audience and fetch very high prices in auctions. Saying that it is not about the money, which if I remember correctly was not Van Gogh's real aim. I think his real aim was just to paint what he saw, and to try and put his own twist on things. He was not a commercial artist but ironically so his works are much more sought after than a lot of the commercial scenes after past gone days. The sad part is that he was not appreciated during his life time.
