Sefton Council is urging residents to remember their duty of care when getting rid of household waste, in order to avoid huge flytipping fines.

Many residents hire third parties to take away household waste and large bulky items from their home but most do not know the rules and regulations that cover these types of waste disposal.

By law, individuals are required to make sure the firm removing their waste is authorised to do so and is registered with the Environment Agency as an official waste carrier.

It is also vital to retain the name and address of the person or firm disposing of your waste.

In three recent cases in South Sefton, residents have fallen foul of rogue waste collectors who have simply dumped their waste as flytipping around the borough.

If flytipped waste is traced back to a particular property, the householder could be fined up to £5,000 if they cannot properly identify who they used to get rid of their waste.

Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regulation and Compliance, said:

“Recently we have experienced issues with members of the public not complying with their legal responsibilities to ensure any waste they produce is removed by a registered carrier.

“This can be from the local paper, social media or shop noticeboard but the responsibility is with the household to check they are legitimate first before they employ them.

“Too many residents are employing people to take waste away which is then being flytipped in the borough.

“Householders are required to make a simply check with the Environment Agency in order to ascertain if the person that they are passing their waste to is a registered waste carrier.

“Ask to see their waste carrier license issued by the Environment Agency or contact the Environment Agency directly on 08708 506 506 and ask for a free instant Waste Carrier Validation Check.

“Alternatively you can check online on the Environment Agency website.

“Even after you’ve checked, keep their details so that if flytipping does occur, you can show that you acted responsibly.

“You can do this is many ways, such as asking for an official invoice or a form with all of their details on.

“If they are not prepared to give you their details, don’t employ them.”

Typical sefton council we have travellers dumping rubbish with impunity and they then threaten the council tax payers who pay there inflated pay. Sefton council would rather fine a little old lady who in good faith pays someone to get ride of her rubbish ,rather than confront a big fully grown adult. Pathetic.

What claptrap! The Council would not fine a little old lady for the actions you describe.
Climb down off your Council bashing horse for a moment and consider the intention of the information. It is to highlight something which many individuals might be in ignorance of. It should also be apparent to anyone with a modicum of intelligence that those 'contractors' whom aren't legitimate are the very ones least likely to dispose of waste legally.
Perhaps by being informed people will stop employing the travellers because, unless you've been on the planet Zarg for the last few years, it is a sad fact that that community does operate outside the law.
The travellers also operate 'mob handed' and Police support would be required to ensure the employees safety and preserve order - unless your suggesting they deserve to be in casualty having their jaws wired up and bones set.
Again the sad fact is the Police won't or can't do this and again this shouldn't be a surprise to anyone except keyboard warriors such as yourself.
I find you and the content of your post to be pathetic!

Dear Gazaprop, Why so aggressive. In regards to the Police not getting involved because they may get hurt. That suggests people who are threatening violence should be left alone. I can just see it now the Sargent telling a constable not to go near the nasty man as he may hit you. By your use of language I would suggest you are very naive ,or worst just ignorant.

    Dear gerrard24

instead of gathering up your skirts at what you perceive as me being aggressive, read what I've written and - if you don't believe the Police won't put in resources to chase the travellers when they fly-tip then it is you, not I, that is naive.
The harm element I referred to was attacks against Council employees - again you are naive if you believe this won't happen. The travellers have no regard or respect for the Police let alone untrained and outnumbered Council employees. Are you still suggesting they should put themselves in harms way to satisfy your apparent lust for justice at all costs.
Instead of making trite comments about nasty men and being afraid of violence perhaps you could suggest what would be considered an acceptable level of danger, or injury, in this pursuit of the mobile crime wave we call travellers.

Clearly council employees who feel or are threatened should call the Police thats what their for.

Allowing sections of society to break the law is a problem the council is going to have deal with otherwise this will continue.

Council tax payers should not have to pick up the expense for council employees failures.

Once again - another person, clearly ignorant on how things work in the real world, sees fit to use pejorative adjectives when discussing Council employees.

When will you people understand this fact - THE POLICE DO NOT WANT TO KNOW!!!!
