Blackpool recorded four consecutive victories for the first time in eight years with a 3-0 win at Gillingham.

Two first-half goals from Kyle Vassell and Nathan Delfouneso, plus a late effort from Kelvin Mellor, secured all three points and kept The Seasiders in the top-half of the Sky Bet League One table.

Jay Spearing did have an opportunity to add to the goal tally from the penalty spot just after the interval, however his strike came back off the post.

Manager Gary Bowyer opted to name an unchanged side for the game, though Kelvin Mellor and Jim McAlister did return to the substitutes bench following injuries.

The Seasiders almost made the ideal start to the game, as Kyle Vassell struck the crossbar with a diving header inside three minutes.

Nathan Delfouneso then had a good chance with a header from a corner, however he glanced wide of the post.

It was Blackpool who continued in the ascendancy, finding plenty of space in the middle of the park. It was just that final ball that was lacking.

The breakthrough finally came in the 28th minute though, as Kyle Vassell followed up a spilled Jimmy Ryan strike to fire in his 11th of the campaign.

Vassell turned provider minute later, drilling the ball across the six-yard box for Nathan Delfouneso to bundle in and double Blackpool’s advantage.

The goal didn’t go down well with the Gillingham fans, who watched Mark Byrne try and reply with an effort he dragged wide soon after.

Tom Eaves had a good opportunity to pull one back on the stroke of half-time but he was just off target.

A glorious chance to make it 3-0 came two minutes after the restart, when Curtis Tilt was brought down inside the area by Tom Eaves. Jay Spearing stepped up to take the penalty but watched his strike cannon back off the post.

Josh Parker drove a 25-yard effort over the bar in response, as Gillingham continued to be frustrated in their attempts to create any clear-cut opportunities.

Kelvin Mellor was introduced for Blackpool prior to the 70th minute, with Nathan Delfouneso the man to go off after receiving a yellow card minutes earlier.

Armand Gnanduillet then replaced Kyle Vassell in the 78th minute and he was immediately involved in the action. The striker chested a free-kick down in the box before watching his strike deflect behind for a corner.

It was the two substitutes who combined to score Blackpool’s third in the 83rd minute. Gnanduillet made a run down the left and squared the ball for Mellor to tap in.

That goal saw manager quickly signal for Jim McAlister to get ready and come on to make his first league appearance since breaking his leg 14 months ago. His previous return from injury had come in the Checkatrade Trophy in January.

The closing stages petered out without any further chances, as Blackpool continued their rich vein of league form.
