Blackpool’s St. John Vianney Catholic Primary School has been appointed as a Read Write Inc. Model School as a result of their excellent literacy teaching in 2016/17/18.
A Model School demonstrates best practice in teaching Read Write Inc. Phonics, a reading and writing programme created by Ruth Miskin, one of the UK’s leading authorities on teaching children to read and adviser to the Government on literacy teaching since 1997.

To be appointed a school must show that its teaching is of a consistent high standard and is sharing knowledge with its staff to embed effective teaching principles. The introduction of the teaching techniques has resulted in great success for the school in Government Phonic Screening Checks.

Elaine Allen, Headteacher, St John Vianney Catholic Primary School, said: “We are really proud to have achieved this status as it is formal recognition of the excellent teaching and learning practice in our school for Phonics and Early Literacy. Year on year, we have achieved outstanding Phonics and Early Literacy results and we now feel able to offer support to other schools in these areas of teaching and learning, a process which has already started.”

Cllr Kath Benson, Cabinet Member for Schools and Learning said: “I am thrilled to see yet more evidence of Blackpool Schools such as St John Vianney delivering innovative teaching programmes.

“Through this initiative the school has achieved real progress and now as a Model School are able to share their learning and expertise with teachers from other schools across Blackpool to improve the reading and writing skills of all our children which is vital for their future.”

Ruth Miskin, commented: “I am so thrilled that the children in St. John Vianney Catholic Primary School are making such fast progress. Model Schools are vital in our drive to help children in other schools make the same progress.”

Press Educational Consultant, Lisa Fielding of Oxford University Press, publishers of Read Write Inc. Phonics, added:“I am delighted thatSt. John Vianney Catholic Primary Schoolhas become a Read Write Inc. Model School. It has been fantastic to see the school develop and flourish, it’s great that other schools in the area can visit and see their brilliant Read Write Inc. lessons in action.”
