Come and see the sails turning at Marsh Mill in Thornton on 13 and 14 May as part of National Mills Weekend celebrations.

Marsh Mill in Thornton is joining in the celebrations for National Mills Weekend on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 May.

The theme for 2017 is Engineers and Engineering – a way of celebrating the engineers and millwrights who built mills and their machinery. The event coincides with ‘Mills On the Air’ and Thornton Cleveleys Amateur Radio Club will be transmitting from Marsh Mill on Sunday 14 May to other mills around the world, potentially as far away as Australia.

Discover the history of this 18th Century Grade II* listed tower windmill between 10.30am and 4.30pm on both days. Tours are available for a small fee. There will be an array of great family friendly activities throughout the weekend and the mill sails will turn on both days.

At 222 years old and standing at over 70 feet, Marsh Mill is one of the tallest windmills in Europe, and the best preserved in the north west of England with much of the original machinery still intact.

Wyre Council recently invested £320,000 in the mill on extensive repairs to the roof, fantail and reefing stage (balcony) and a new set of sails.

Tours are conducted by a dedicated team of volunteers who are always keen for extra help with helping to meet and greet visitors, making sure the mill is clean and tidy and supporting events and activities.

If you would like to get involved contact Wyre's volunteer co-ordinator on 01253 887504 or email volunteering@wyre.gov.uk.

Marsh Mill is located at Marsh Mill Shopping Village on Fleetwood Road North in Thornton Cleveleys. It is open every weekend from 10.30am to 4.30pm until November.

Marsh Mill shopping village boasts some shops, places to enjoy a bite to eat and free parking.

Other dates when the sails will turn during 2017 include: Thornton Gala 11 June, Heritage Open Days 9 and 10 September and Birthday celebration on 21 and 22 October.
