Merseyside Police Match Commander Superintendent Paul White said: "We worked very closely with both clubs to plan for last night before agreeing the route of the buses to ensure the teams and public were safe before the match.
"Two officers sustained cuts and swelling – one was struck by an object and another suffered glass cut injures. It is testament to our officers that they put themselves in harm’s way to protect the people on the bus and members of the public, and it is pleasing to hear that nobody else was seriously injured.
"It has also been encouraging to see the huge number of messages from people in Merseyside who have condemned the actions of those people who put the enjoyment and more importantly the safety of others at risk.
"What should have been an celebratory event for thousands of people was spoiled by a number of people who threw bottles, cans and pyrotechnics.
"Their actions will not be tolerated by Merseyside Police and we will do everything in our power to find those responsible and put them before the courts.
"We are reviewing CCTV footage, our own body work camera footage and working with the club to identify those responsible.
"We know many people were filming the events with camera phones and ask that anyone with any footage of the projectiles being thrown send it to a dedicated email address so that it can be reviewed: team.coach.incident@merseyside.police.uk"

Considering all the "trouble" at other stadiums e.g. Heysel etc, which involved a minor disruptive element of Liverpool supporters, and when they have a public enquiry into Hillsborough (quite rightly so), and they ask for our support and sympathy, I'd have thought with all that "history" of problems, Liverpool supporters would have learned to be at the forefront of attempts to halt any violence or hatred towards other teams.
After yesterday evenings events, what little sympathy I had left has completely gone. Don't you EVER EVER learn from your past?
I can't type here what I think of them. I'M FUMING!!!!!

Unfortunately there's an element of their support who use exoneration for Hillsborough as an excuse for bad behaviour. Because Hillsborough was someone else's fault then everything else can be blamed on someone else.

Don't be surprised to see another rewriting of history taking place. In years to come the story will be about that nasty Mancunian coach driver steering his vehicle towards innocent football fans who were just out enjoying a quiet, pre match drink.
