It’s the Year of the Dog at Southport Flower Show.

Visitors to the Southport Flower Show can bring along a very special guest this summer – their pet dog.

For the first time in the event’s 89-year history, families are welcome to bring along their four-legged friends to the seaside venue in Victoria Park.

Organisers of Britain’s largest independent flower show have issued the open invitation as celebrations are held to start the Year of the Dog in the Chinese calendar.

Previously, only guide dogs were permitted onto the showground during the four-day event held in August.

But for many years, one of the most common questions from visitors to the show has been to ask if they can bring their beloved pets along with them for the day out.

For the 2018 Southport Flower Show, animal lovers will have their wishes granted – and their dogs will also be admitted for no extra charge.

General Manager Ray Roukin said: “We know the Southport Flower Show is hugely popular with dog lovers and we’re always being asked by visitors if they can bring their pets along.

“2018 will be the Year of the Dog at Southport."

The show will also feature a brand new Arena entertainment programme, with acts to be announced closer to the event.

Southport Flower Show is on for four days from Thursday 16th until Sunday 19th August.

Note: Dogs are welcome at the 2018 event but must be kept on a lead at all times and owners must clean up after them. Bins are located throughout the showground. Unfortunately dogs are NOT allowed in the catering or food marquees (with the exception of official assistance dogs).

Wonderful news, Dogs barking, Dogs fighting, Dogs on long leads getting tangled around legs and tripping people up. Dogs jumping up at passing people. Groups of Dog owners blocking walkways as they fawn over their animals, and then how many will actually bag it and bin it. Oh and then there is the Dog that cocks it’s leg on your shoe or leg as you stand admiring an exhibit. No thanks I will not be going this year.
I await the cacophony of protestations.

Cheer up. It provides you with a great opportunity for ridiculous hyperbole about your pet peeve.

I'm with you, if I want to see dozens of dogs I'll go to a dog show. remember all dog owners your "best friend" might well be regarded as a bloody nuisance by others and yes I have owned dogs, am not a dog hater, not to keen on many owners however.

I totally agree. Ranting aside, I do not think it a suitable place for dogs if it’s a hot day especially inside a marquee it can be exhausting for the poor animals and a risk of them being being walked on. But money is king and that is the driving force here.

The Headline had me thinking Theresa May was opening the show this year but it will more likely be Esther McVey.
