Fire crews have been called to 104 small fires over the last week, involving rubbish, fence panels and wheelie bins.

At four of these incidents, crews came under attack from youths who threw fireworks, stones and road signs at the crews and the fire engine.

Between 1st October and 24th October, Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service has dealt with 24 fires linked to wheelie bins and refuse containers. These incidents took place across Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens and the Wirral.

When crews are called out to secondary fires, it prevents them from responding to other potentially life threatening incidents.

We would urge people in the run up to bonfire night to report any build-up of combustible materials (wood, mattresses, couches, fence panels etc) that could be used for deliberate fires and bonfires. You can do this via our social media pages or by calling 0800 731 5958.

We would also urge local residents to take care in helping to minimise the risk of their wheelie bins being targeted. Only put your bin out on the day of collection and bring it back in immediately. Store it in a safe area away from doors, windows and fences.
