Planned road works in the North West– summary for Monday 26 June to Sunday 2 July 2017.

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 23 June and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible. Drivers looking for road works information (such as overnight carriageway closures) for individual schemes should now visit www.trafficengland.com. Some of our larger schemes have project pages giving other information. These can now be accessed from a dedicated regional page: http://roads.highways.gov.uk/north-west.

M56 junctions 15 to 16
A project is taking place to resurface both carriageways between the M53 and the end of the motorway. The work involves closing either the westbound or eastbound carriageway overnight on Friday and Saturday nights (8pm to 7am) and also on Sunday nights (8pm to 5am). Clearly-signed diversions will be in place. During the daytime on Saturdays and Sundays, a single lane will be open to drivers, sometimes using the hard shoulder. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of June.

M6 junctions 16 to 19 (Cheshire smart motorway)
Work is underway to upgrade the M6 to a smart motorway between Crewe and Knutsford, converting the hard shoulder to an extra lane and introducing new variable speed limits. Narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit are in place for the safety of drivers and workers. There will be overnight carriageway closures between junction 16 and junction 17 on Monday (26 June) when the northbound carriageway will be closed from 10pm to 6am and on Wednesday (28 June) when the southbound carriageway be closed between 10pm and 6am.

M6 junction 21a/M62 junction 10 (Croft Interchange)
Construction work is taking place on a major project to tackle congestion and improve the flow of traffic between the M6 and M62 at Croft Interchange. A 50mph speed limit, backed by average speed cameras, will be in place along main carriageways of both the M6 and M62 and interchange link roads.

M6 Junction 30 to junction 29 *this weekend
Finishing works for a resurfacing project will be taking place along the southbound carriageway this weekend with the southbound carriageway fully closed between the 2 junctions on Saturday night (24 June) from 9pm to 5am. A clearly-signed diversion will be in place.

M60 Junction 1 to Junction 5
Five weeks of work to renew carriageway and other road markings and road studs started on Monday 12 June with the first of a series of overnight, 8pm to 5am weekday lane closures on both the clockwise and anti-clockwise carriageways. There will be no full carriageway closures and the work will be done in short sections. Slip roads at junctions 3 and 4 will need to close overnight when the work is being done in these areas – clearly-signed diversions will be in place.

M60 junction 8 to M62 junction 20 (Sale to Rochdale)
A major smart motorway scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures, with narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit in place for the safety of drivers and road workers. On Monday (26 June) there will be an off-peak, daytime closure of the clockwise entry slip road at junction 17. This is to complete noisy piling work.

M61 Junction 9 (M65 interchange)
Overnight resurfacing work started in May at the roundabout which links the M61 to the M65. New traffic sensors will also be installed, road markings will be repainted and bridge joints will be repaired. The roundabout and some slip roads will be closed overnight, between 8pm and 5am, with diversions in place. The project is due to be completed by the end of June.

M62 junction 11 to junction 12
Lane and carriageway closures over 10 weekends started on Friday 16 June as resurfacing is delivered on both the eastbound and westbound carriageways. Eastbound or westbound carriageway closures – with clearly-signed diversions in place – will take place between 9pm and 7am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
