Planned road works in the North West– summary for Monday 1 to Sunday 7 May 2017

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 28 April and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible. Drivers looking for road works information (such as overnight carriageway closures) for individual schemes should now visit www.trafficengland.com. Some of our larger schemes have project pages giving other information. These can now be accessed from a dedicated regional page: http://roads.highways.gov.uk/north-west.

M53 junctions 1 to 2 (Wallasey to Upton)
Work to upgrade the safety barrier in the central reservation between junctions 1 and 2 on the M53 started in early March. Lane closures will be in place overnight, with some full carriageway closures later in the project. Works will be carried out during weekends only until early May.

M56 junctions 15 to 16
A project - needing up to 8 weekends - to resurface both the westbound and eastbound carriageways between the M53 and the end of the motorway, started on Friday 21 April and will continue this and next weekend. The work involves closing either the westbound or eastbound carriageway overnight on Friday, Saturday nights (8pm to 7am each night) and Sunday nights (between 8pm and 5am). Clearly-signed diversions will be in place. At all other times – i.e. during the day - on Saturdays and Sundays, a single lane will be open to drivers, sometimes using the hard shoulder.

M6 junctions 16 to 19 (Cheshire smart motorway)
Work is underway to upgrade the M6 to a smart motorway between Crewe and Knutsford, converting the hard shoulder to an extra lane and introducing new variable speed limits. Narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit are in place for the safety of drivers and workers.

M6 Junction 23 to Junction 21
The southbound carriageway will be closed on Friday night between junction 23 at Newton-le-Willows and junction 21 at Croft Interchange between 9pm and 5am to enable routine maintenance and repairs – including installing new reflective road studs.

M6/M56 Lymm Interchange
We’ve started overnight resurfacing on the link roads from the southbound M6 onto the eastbound and westbound M56 (M6 junction 20 onto M56 junction 9). The 8 week project will also involve renewal of road markings and some electrical works. The work will take place between 8pm and 5am during the week (Monday to Friday) and will require closures of the link road with clearly signed diversions in place.

M6 junction 21a/M62 junction 10 (Croft Interchange)
Construction work is taking place on a major project to tackle congestion and improve the flow of traffic between the M6 and M62 at Croft Interchange. A 50mph speed limit, backed by average speed cameras, will be in place along main carriageways of both the M6 and M62 and interchange link roads. Some overnight slip road closures will also take place.

M6 junctions 29 to 30 (M65 to M61 interchanges)
Overnight resurfacing work is taking place on the M6 between 8pm and 5am, Monday to Friday. Clearly signed diversions will be in place, and the scheme is due to be completed in May.

M60 junction 8 to M62 junction 20 (Sale to Rochdale)

A major smart motorway scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures, with narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit in place for the safety of drivers and road workers.

M65 junction 1a to junction 3
Last week we started renewing road markings along both carriageways of the M65 between junction 1a and junction 3. This is a month-long scheme which will take place between 9pm and 5am each night (7am at weekends). To do the work safely there will be overnight carriageway closures between the junctions, with clearly-signed diversions in place.

A585 Amounderness Way, Thornton
Temporary traffic lights will be in place between West Drive and Bourne Way until the end of May for maintenance and inspection work.

A590 Ulverston
Cumbria County Council improvements are continuing around the junction between the A590 Lightburn Road and Daltongate - 24hr traffic signals are in place for carriageway widening, kerb realignments, new crossing facilities, new street lighting, new footways, new parking bays and then amendment of existing traffic signs. Works are due to be completed in August.

A66 Bassenthwaite Lake
A contraflow system for flood resilience work has now been replaced by a single lane closure on the eastbound carriageway. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of May.

A66 Thornthwaite (Osprey Site)

Flood resilience work has now moved to the second Osprey site with overnight carriageway closures in place between 8pm and 6am until the middle of May. Clearly-signed diversions are in place. During the day, temporary traffic lights are in use along with a 40mph speed limit.

NOTES TO EDITORS

1. Highways England is the wholly government-owned company responsible for modernising, maintaining and operating England’s motorways and major A roads.

2. Maintenance and improvement projects: We plan maintenance and improvement projects carefully to allow road works to be completed safely, in a cost effective way while keeping disruption to road users to a minimum. We do as much work as possible overnight and when roads are less busy in order to keep more lanes open for road users at peak travel times. Drivers are advised to check their route for road works and allow extra time for their journeys where needed. We have a variety of journey planning tools that road users can use to check travel conditions on the roads we manage, and we will do all we can to keep road users informed.

3. Safety at roadworks: Highways England is working with the industry and road users to reduce the risks of working on the roads. For the safety of road workers and all road users, when you are approaching roadworks:

- Keep within the speed limit – it is there for your safety.

- Get into the correct lane in good time – don’t keep switching.

- Concentrate on the road ahead, not the roadworks.

- Be alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering roadworks.

- Keep a safe distance – there could be queues in front.

- Observe all signs – they are there to help you.

- And be alert for road workers, the roads are their workplace.

4. Real-time traffic information for England’s motorways and major A roads is available:

From the web at www.highways.gov.uk/traffic or from a smartphone at m.highways.gov.uk

By phone from the Highways England Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 at any time. (Calls to 03 numbers are charged at no more than a national call to an 01 or 02 number and are included in all discount schemes and call allowances. This applies to all landlines, mobiles and payphones. Call costs will vary depending on your landline or mobile supplier.) Make sure it’s safe and legal before you call. Before using any mobile, find a safe place to park. Never stop on the hard shoulder of a motorway except in an emergency.
