Bids to operate the Fleetwood to Knott End ferry close today.

A subsidy from Lancashire County Council for the service ceases at the end of March due to budget cuts, meaning the ferry could stop running unless somebody comes forward to take over.

It's hoped a new operator will take the contract on from April, with Wyre Council pledging to subsidise the service for the next four years of an eight year deal....

After which time, the authority would expect the service to be self sufficient.

A spokesperson for Wyre Council said: ''Wyre Council feel this essential service needs to continue to serve residents and visitors to Wyre and have been exploring ways to retain it.

''After talks with Lancashire County Council they have agreed to hand over the boat, Wyre Rose to a new operator. Therefore with a continuing subsidy from Wyre Council, we are seeking a new partner to run the ferry service and are inviting bids.

''We are seeking a new operator for the Fleetwood to Knott End-on-sea ferry service, and are willing to show our commitment to this service by continuing to provide a subsidy for the first four years of the eight year contract. After which we expect the service to be self-sustaining.''
