Wyre Council planners have this afternoon turned down an application by developers to build apartments on the site of the former Fleetwood Pier.

The scheme went before Wyre Councillors who voted six votes to four to oppose the plans because of the scale of the development.

Angry Fleetwood residents had opposed the building of apartments on the site, claiming it would ruin the view, and open the flood gates to similar development along The Esplanade.

County Councillor Lorraine Beavers who had spearheaded a campaign to stop the development says they were happy with the outcome, but admitted it could go to appeal or revision.
Councillor Beavers told Radio Wave that the other development on that side of The Esplanade inlcuding The Marine Hall and The swimming pool were part of leisure facilities and not residential. She said to grant residential on that side of the road would be to "open the flood gates" for similar applications to "build on the beach"
