Wyre Council say a clear-up operation has seen over a tonne of 'orange' substance cleared from local beaches so far.

Pet owners are being reminded to keep dogs on a lead while the unknown substance is being tested.

The orange blobs have also been spotted in Blackpool and St Annes.

Wyre Council have released this statement:

“We are continuing our efforts to clear the beaches following reports of a substance washed up between Knott End, Fleetwood and Cleveleys.

We are working closely with our partners at the Environment Agency, Blackpool Council and Fylde Council to monitor the incident.

The substance can be described as fatty, oily, greasy with a rancid aroma and bright orange in colour.

So far, our teams have collected just over a tonne (1200 KG) of the substance which is being stored until tests reveal the contents. Once the results from the laboratory tests have been received, the Environment Agency will provide direction on the appropriate disposal routes.

Our rangers are patrolling the beaches to monitor the situation and provide updates regularly.

The beaches remain open, but we would like to reiterate that dogs should be kept on a lead at all times and children supervised.
