Weather forecasts of subzero temperatures are likely to cause problems along the UK shoreline and coast over the next few days.

With snow predicted and freezing temperatures likely to bring icy patches to many areas, HM Coastguard is warning people to be extra careful at the coast.

Slippery conditions are likely to affect promenades, cliff edges and rocks meaning potentially dangerous conditions.

Kaimes Beasley, controller with HM Coastguard said: ‘It might seem a little draconian to tell people to stay away from the coast, but we would strongly advise everyone to think twice about venturing out if the weather turns excessively wintry.

‘Don’t risk going out in bad weather. It’s easy to think that the places you always walk will be safe, but ice and black ice can catch anyone out. We know that the coast can look particularly dramatic in wintry weather but please don’t risk your life for a photograph or selfie.’

'As always though, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard, if you get into trouble at the coast or see someone else in difficulty.'
