Planned roadworks in the North West– summary for Monday 15 to Sunday 21 May 2017.

The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 12 May and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible. Drivers looking for road works information (such as overnight carriageway closures) for individual schemes should now visit www.trafficengland.com. Some of our larger schemes have project pages giving other information. These can now be accessed from a dedicated regional page: http://roads.highways.gov.uk/north-west.

M53 junctions 1 to 2 (Wallasey to Upton)
Work to upgrade the safety barrier in the central reservation between junctions 1 and 2 on the M53 started in early March. Lane closures will be in place at all times of the day, with some full carriageway closures later in the project. The work will be carried out during weekends only and is due to be completed in June.

M56 junctions 15 to 16
A project is taking place to resurface both carriageways between the M53 and the end of the motorway. The work involves closing either the westbound or eastbound carriageway overnight on Friday and Saturday nights (8pm to 7am) and also on Sunday nights (8pm to 5am). Clearly-signed diversions will be in place. During the daytime on Saturdays and Sundays, a single lane will be open to drivers, sometimes using the hard shoulder. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of June.

M6 junctions 16 to 19 (Cheshire smart motorway)
Work is underway to upgrade the M6 to a smart motorway between Crewe and Knutsford, converting the hard shoulder to an extra lane and introducing new variable speed limits. Narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit are in place for the safety of drivers and workers.

M6/M56 Lymm Interchange
Resurfacing work is taking place on the link roads from the southbound M6 onto the eastbound and westbound M56 (M6 junction 20 onto M56 junction 9). The project will also involve repainting road markings and some electrical work. The work will take place between 8pm and 5am during the week (Monday to Friday) and will require closures of the link road with clearly signed diversions in place.

M6 junction 21a/M62 junction 10 (Croft Interchange)
Construction work is taking place on a major project to tackle congestion and improve the flow of traffic between the M6 and M62 at Croft Interchange. A 50mph speed limit, backed by average speed cameras, will be in place along main carriageways of both the M6 and M62 and interchange link roads. Some overnight slip road closures will also take place.

M6 junctions 29 to 30 (M65 to M61 interchanges)
Overnight resurfacing work is taking place on the M6 between 8pm and 5am, Monday to Friday. Clearly signed diversions will be in place, and the scheme is due to be completed in May.

M60 junction 8 to M62 junction 20 (Sale to Rochdale)
A major smart motorway scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures, with narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit in place for the safety of drivers and road workers. The anticlockwise M60 between junctions 12 and 8, and the eastbound M62 between junctions 18 and 20, are due to be closed overnight from 10pm until 6am for five nights from Monday 15 May.

M65 junction 1a to junction 3
A project is taking place to repaint road markings along both carriageways of the M65 between junction 1a and junction 3. There will be overnight carriageway closures between the junctions, with clearly-signed diversions in place, from 9pm until 5am each night (until 7am at weekends).

A5036 Dunnings Bridge Road / Church Road
A project to improve pedestrian crossings on the A5036, including installing new tactile paving, is due to start on Monday 15 May. Temporary lanes closures will be in place from 9.30am to 3.30pm and from 8pm to 5am, Monday to Friday, as well as during some weekends. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of July.

A585 Amounderness Way, Thornton
Temporary traffic lights will be in place between West Drive and Bourne Way until the end of May for maintenance and inspection work.

A590 Ulverston
Cumbria County Council improvements are continuing around the junction between the A590 Lightburn Road and Daltongate. Temporary traffic lights are in place for carriageway widening, kerb realignments, new crossing facilities, new street lights, new footpaths, new parking bays and improved signs. The work is due to be completed in August.

A66 Bassenthwaite Lake
A contraflow system for flood resilience work has now been replaced by a single lane closure on the eastbound carriageway. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of June.

A66 Thornthwaite (Osprey Site)
Flood resilience work is being carried out on the A66 at Thornthwaite. Temporary traffic lights are in use along with a 40mph speed restriction. There will also be some overnight road closures in June and July, with diversions in place. The scheme is due to be completed in the summer.

A66 Crackenthorpe
Temporary traffic lights will be in place while BT installs fibre cables between 9.30am and 3.30pm. The work is due to be completed in late May.
