Merseyside Police, in partnership with Sefton Safer Communities Partnership, will be handing out DNA marking security kits in Sefton this weekend, as a continued response to the theft and anti-social use of scooters, motorbikes and mopeds in the area.

The kits are police approved and allow owners to mark and protect their vehicle.

Local policing officers will be distributing the kits on a first-come-first-served basis at the following police stations:
Crosby Police Station - 1pm-3pm on Saturday, 30 September
Maghull Police Station - 1pm-3pm on Sunday, 1 October

The only condition of receiving a kit is that any bikes being marked are required to be registered to a Sefton address.

Local Community Sergeant Kate Young said: "Theft and anti-social behaviour involving bikes will not be tolerated, and this is another great crime prevention tool for owners.

"DNA marking has previously helped police to reduce business robbery and burglary offences and can also be beneficial in targeting the theft and anti-social and criminal use of bikes and scooters. We are looking forward to welcoming members of the community this weekend and giving out the kits and any crime prevention advice that they need."

Councillor Trish Hardy, Sefton Safer Community Partnership Chair, said: "We agreed to fund these security kits to help assist Merseyside Police in targeting those criminals who continue to blight our thriving communities by stealing motorbikes, scrambler bikes and mopeds and using them in an anti-social manner.

"The Sefton Safer Communities Partnership will not tolerate this behaviour and the consequences this type of crime has on an individual or community."

If anyone has any information about the anti-social and criminal use or storage of motorbikes or leave information anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Information can also be provided via their online form: https://crimestoppers-uk.org/give-in...rmation-online.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what a DNA marking kit is, or does? Bikes obviously don't have DNA, or is it a euphemism?

As most 'reports' on here are just copied and pasted from press releases, I won't hold my breath.

DNA is now a buzz word for practically anything. The marking kit is actually a UV fluorescent tracer and microdots (which have a unique number). The number gets registered to a particular person/address. Some years ago similar kits were given out (for a small charge) via the local Home Watch to mark your own property then they were called Smartwater.
