Merseyside police dogs and their handlers are to take centre stage in a new TV series which aims to show the day-to-day work they carry out including tackling crime and disorder, locating drugs and stolen property and tracking fleeing criminals.

The ‘Dog Detective’ series, which will be screened on the Quest Red TV channel, features four Merseyside Police dogs and their handlers - Constable Simon Harris with PD Kane; Constable Dave Smith with PD Wallis; Constable Dave Bartley with PD Chico and PD Lucy and Constable Jenny Simpson with PD Deema.

The ten part series starts at 8pm next Monday, 5th November.

A film crew has been following the four officers – and officers from other forces - during their regular work shifts since March this year.

Inspector Col Rooney said: "This was an invaluable opportunity for us to show the work that our police dogs and their handlers do on the front line every day to fight crime and protect our communities.

"We have a number of dogs in the force who are trained to deal with different circumstances such as sniffing out drugs, explosives or money or finding suspects after crimes have taken place such as burglaries.

"They can be called upon to deal with any manner of potential dangerous situations and our officers have to have total trust in their abilities. It also shows the unbreakable bond between police officer and police dog and how much they depend on each other when called out on jobs.

"The police officers just carried on with their normal duties when the film crew was with them so the series captures all the highs and lows of front-line policing."

Dog Detectives - Monday from 5th November at 8pm on Quest Red. Quest Red is on Freeview 38, Freesat 169, Sky 149, Virgin 215 and BT TV 38
