NSPCC’s School Service in Merseyside is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help primary school children learn about keeping safe.

With places available across the region, volunteers will get the opportunity to work as part of a team to deliver Speak Out, Stay Safe assemblies and workshops in local schools. The sessions help children understand what to do in difficult and worrying situations, and how ChildLine can offer help when they need it.

NSPCC School Service Area Coordinator Helen O’Sullivan said: “We have a fantastic team here in Merseyside who do vital work in helping children stay safe. A lot of the time, when children experience real difficulties, they won’t necessarily understand what is happening or how to look for help.

“Our volunteers make sure that when children come up against difficult situations – whether it is abuse, neglect, bullying or something that is worrying them – they know who they can turn to. But in order to reach every child in Merseyside we do need more volunteers to join our team.”

NSPCC School Service volunteer Ann Norris, from Bootle, said: “I volunteer because I had a happy childhood and I want to tell those who need help how to find it. I’ve spoken to lots of adults who wish they had this type of support in their childhood to prevent taking some of their problems into adulthood.

“Each school visited is unique and interesting. Children tell you like it is, I like that. They will pull on your heartstrings and make you howl with laughter.

“The team I work with are a great support and fun to work with. But most of all I enjoy the feeling that we are making a difference to children’s lives, by giving them information to empower themselves and look after other children they know.

“I have not been disappointed since I joined the NSPCC – the training is superb, the support second to none and the children are a joy.”

Since 2011 the NSPCC School Service has visited 286 schools, speaking to 35,700 children, but there are more schools to reach and future generations to safeguard – without volunteers this will not be possible.
