Check before you travel: there will be limited Merseyrail services focussed on getting people to and from Aintree for the Grand National. These services are likely to be very busy. You may want to consider other public transport options.

Merseyrail and Northern services will start much later and finish much earlier.
Leave longer for your journey.

Stick to public transport wherever possible to reduce congestion on key routes such as the Mersey Tunnels and roads in and out of the City Centre and around Aintree.


Merseyrail Wirral line and Northern Line

Limited Merseyrail services will be focussed on getting people to and from Aintree for the Grand National. These services, including rail replacement, are likely to be very busy. You are advised to consider other public transport options.

The bus may be a good alternative; there is an extensive bus network across the City Region (see bus).
Rail stations are likely to be busier as a result of reduced rail services. Don’t aim for the last scheduled train, get there early.

Mainline services

Northern will be running a greatly reduced, and revised, timetable on Saturday 8th April.
The last Northern train is scheduled to leave Liverpool Lime Street station at 18.30. Customers who want to travel by train after then will need to use other train operator services from Liverpool Lime Street, or consider alternative forms of travel for their journey home.
Services by other mainline train operators– TransPennine Express, East Midlands and Virgin Trains– will continue to run as normal. However, if you are travelling to and from Aintree via Liverpool South Parkway(LSP) be aware that there are no Merseyrail services from LSP. There will be existing bus services to get you to and from LSP (see bus section)
If you are travelling via mainline services that call at Chester be aware that there are no Merseyrail services interchanging at Chester. There will be existing bus services to get you to and from Chester (see bus section)

Bus


Commercial bus services may be a good with an extensive network across the Liverpool City Region, including cross river. Services will be monitored and strengthened on key routes.
Existing bus services may be an option for people who don’t have rail services or who may have a rail replacement alternative.

West Kirby to Liverpool / Liverpool to West Kirby 437
Hunts Cross (via Liverpool South Parkway) to Liverpool / Liverpool to Hunts Cross (via Liverpool south Parkway):
Services 75 and 78 operate between Hunts Cross (Mackets Lanes) to Liverpool City Centre
Services 166 and 266 operate between Hunts Cross and Liverpool South Parkway.
Services 80/80A, 82 and 86/86A/86D operate between Liverpool Southparkway and Liverpool City Centre.
Ormskirk to Liverpool/Liverpool to Ormskirk: 310 (via Aintree)
Kirkby to Liverpool/Liverpool to Kirkby 14, 14a, 17, 19, 20, 21 and X3
Southport to Liverpool/ Liverpool to Southport 47, 300 and X2
Advice: Plan your journey, check timetables and take into account that buses may be busier than usual.
Mersey Ferries

Services will be running a normal River Explorer weekend service, 10am to 6pm
You can still use the River Explorer cruise to travel cross-river. Services start at 10am at Seacombe, with the last returning vessel leaving Pier Head at 6.00pm

Valid cross-river rail tickets and passes will be accepted for cyclists only.

There is free parking at Seacombe for 370 cars. Seacombe Ferry Terminal is served by a number of bus services, linking people in the Wallasey, Birkenhead and Arrowe Park areas with the ferry terminal.
