Merseyside Police has issued body worn camera footage showing the moment an officer was driven at by a disqualified driver.

Elliot Flynn, 21 years, of Millbrook Lane, St Helens was jailed for 10 months at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday (5 March 2018) after he admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and failing to provide a sample of blood. He had also breached a suspended sentence order he had received for assault. He was also banned from driving for three years, five months.

Flynn – who had previously been disqualified for drug driving - was driving a car with four passengers when PC Price followed the vehicle at about 9.30pm on 2 February this year. He approached it when it stopped in the car park of the Grapes Hotel pub, Portico Lane in St Helens.

When the officer asked for the keys, Flynn reversed and the officer discharged Taser in an effort to prevent the driver from colliding with him. Flynn then drove towards the officer twice more, forcing him to leap onto the bonnet of his own patrol vehicle behind him. The car struck the police car before it was driven away by Flynn, narrowly avoiding a woman and her two children.

Another officer was then involved in a pursuit of Flynn’s vehicle, which was driven at up to 80mph, and he was later arrested at his own home.

Inspector Phil Cowin said: "As can be seen in the body worn footage, PC Price was forced to jump out of the way to avoid being trapped between his own car and Flynn's.

"It is only through good fortune that our officer, and the woman and children nearby, were not injured during this incident.

"I hope the time he will now spend behind bars will give Flynn time to reflect on the consequences of his actions.

"Anyone who takes to the roads illegally and poses a danger to pedestrians and other motorists risks serving a prison sentence, being banned form driving and losing their licence. My message to these people is ask yourself - is it worth the risk?

"This case is another reminder that our officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect the public of Merseyside, and I’d like to thank PC Price for his efforts.

"I would also like to thank the investigation team for their hard work and the swift arrest of the offender, and the Crown Prosecution Service for helping bring this case to court."
