Only about one third of people in Germany, the UK, France and Norway believe that there is a strong scientific consensus on the reality of climate change, says a major survey of opinions on climate change, climate policy and future energy options among over 4,000 people across those four countries.

That's an important finding, say researchers from the European Perception of Climate Change (EPCC) project, because it's thought that the question may well be a 'gateway belief'. The project is jointly funded by ESRC and its French, German and Norwegian partner Research Councils under the JPI-Climate initiative.

Project coordinator Professor Nick Pidgeon explains: “This means that if you wish to engage people with climate change, and can discuss with them the fact that scientists really do overwhelmingly agree that it is happening, that it poses significant future risk to us all, and is caused primarily by humans, then people will be more concerned about the issue and be more prepared to take action to do something about it.”

The finding is consistent with research from the USA and Australia and has considerable significance for UK and European climate scientists and policymakers. To address this, EPCC researchers led by Cardiff University in collaboration with partners from institutions in Paris, Bergen and Stuttgart, offer a series of six recommendations for more effective public engagement on climate change issues.

These recommendations include helping people 'join the dots' between periods of extreme weather and climate change. The EPCC survey found that the national impacts people most associate with climate change are storms, floods and unpredictable weather. Hence, also talking about these sorts of events helps to tie in with the associations already in people's minds when it comes to climate change. And since adaptation policies appear relatively uncontroversial, communications should build on this to talk about different types of climate response not just mitigation measures such as taxing fossil fuels.

“Public engagement with climate change, and support for polices to tackle it, is critical in creating a climate-proof Europe,” says Professor Pidgeon. “Findings from the EPCC project are proving valuable in helping communications professionals, campaigners, policymakers and other practitioners adopt the most practical and effective ways of engaging the public in climate change conversations.”

When employed and paid by the Government agencies to create a report to prove climate change - one is hardly likely to produce a more factual report which disproves it! It is a good little earner for the Government treasury.

Big con. It was once called Global warming and as that theory was disproven they renamed it climate change. Seeing that the climate on Earth has always changed they have covered every base. It rains climate change it snows climate change, it's warm climate change. Humans are only responsible for 15% of CO2 ,the rest is produced naturally.

G*d, I get so frustrated with climate change deniers. It is so wilfullly wrong to ignore the facts that have been gathered over many years. Why do you think your ideas are better? Is it because you 'feel' they can't be right, or because you see conspiracy theories everywhere? A very worrying trend at the moment (the acme of which is that buffon Trump) is for people to be proud of the fact that they don't read about something before they favour us all with their thoughts. It's an insult to education and rational thought. In this age, where information has never been more readily available, it is particularly perverse to come to an opinion based on nothing at all. Have you studied the weather patterns for the last 50 years, looked at ice samples from Antarctica. observed the effects on ecosystems, and so on? NO, yet you opine that it is all a hoax! Ye gods, how pathetic is that?
And even if (IF) it were all false how exactly does it it bother you? So you have to recycle your waste, or you have to replace your fossil fuels . Well, boohoo for you. At least your island isn't being flooded by rising sea levels so you're alright, Jack!

For the unitiated "jonny come lately" residents of Southport aka "Joan of Arc" may I remind you that Southport is traditionally an ISLAND! At one time on the east side of the island was the "Mere" and on the west side was the sea, at either end of the ISLAND were estuaries - The Alt and the Nile. Only as a result of "climate change" did the sea levels fall and the mere drain leaving Southport connected to the mainland... As a result of Climate Change the Mere may well flood again and Southport becomes an island AGAIN. Climate Change is a perfectly natural 'ebb and flow' in the climate. If you don't like it emmigrate to higher ground?
When we do become an island again we may as well have an independant Republic while we're at it so we can get away from the Red Numpties down in Bottle.........

I have no idea what relevance being a johnny come lately (if I even am one, maybe you know something I don't) has on my remarks.
You are stretching it to say Southport is traditionally an Island. By that decription any land netween two estuaries would qualify if there was a lake somewhere too. Ridiculous, and completely off the point.
FYI Martinmere was drained in a deliberate act by a man, not nature. And Southport has never been between the Alt and the Nile, which was barely a stream anyway.

Some people think the earth is flat. They appear to be quite happy in their ignorance.

Gerrard You are badly misinformed as most skeptics are. The name climate change can be traced back to papers in the 1950's and the IPCC was set-up in the 80'S. The term CC is used more now than GW as I guess it seemed difficult for some people to grasp that GW didn't mean everywhere will be hot all the time. IE It's snowing, what happened to GW. Also that C02 levels could have an influence on climate can be traced back to papers written in 1896 that's almost 130 years ago.

Secondly, human activity accounts for 4% of the carbon flux. Essentially what nature puts in in C02 is also taken out through various sinks. However relatively small our contribution may be, this is not being fully absorbed back into nature and is accumulating in the atmosphere. So around about 40% of the C02 in the atmosphere is due to the burning of fossil fuels as shown by isotopic evidence.

    The global climate's actually cooling:

So, here's a new concept for you.... have you ever considered the source of the links you post?
Perhaps you could find some evidence that governments are profiting from climate change.

Don't want to teach grandmother to suck eggs but temperatures don't go up in straight lines. There will be peaks and troughs. But even from the graph on that site the TREND line is up. But lets forget the Data sets from NOAA , Hadley , Nasa and the Japanese Meteorological society eh!
