Merseyside Police can confirm an investigation is underway following reports shots were fired in Litherland yesterday (Monday 25 September).
At around 8.30pm a report was received that a male had fired a weapon at an unknown person outside the Spar store on Sefton Road. At this stage is not believed that anyone was injured and no damage has been discovered.
The offender made off on a motor scooter in company with a second scooter.
Two males, aged 12 and 14, were detained a short time later close to the Seaforth roundabout and arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and possession of a section one firearm. They have been taken to a police station in Merseyside to be interviewed.
An investigation is currently underway and CCTV and forensic enquiries are ongoing. Officers will be patrolling the area to provide reassurance to the community, and provide a high-visibility presence.
Detective Inspector Simon Vaughan said: "Thankfully nobody has been reported to have been injured following this incident but to use a firearm in the street is clearly incredibly reckless.
"A lot of positive action has been taken in recent weeks by Merseyside Police and our partners as we target those involved in gun crime across Merseyside, including arrests and recoveries of weapons, drugs and cash. This action will continue, and anyone who is involved in organised crime can expect a knock at their door.
"But this action can only be taken with the support of our communities. We need to stand together to bring those responsible to justice and take firearms out of circulation. We have acted and will continue to act on all information, but we need you to help us build up the evidence against these offenders, who are prepared to put our communities at risk, so that we can make the streets safer for you and your families."
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is encouraged to contact officers on the Matrix Serious and Organised Crime gun crime hotline on 0800 230 0600 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
