An update on delivery of the new brown bins by the Borough Council:
'More than 20,000 brown bins have been distributed so far to residents that have signed up for the garden waste collection service and deliveries are continuing.
Anyone who has requested a brown bin from the Council doesn't need to contact us again your order will be processed as quickly as possible. Residents should continue to use their green bin for garden waste and blue bag for recycling paper and cardboard until they receive their new brown bin.
People who haven't yet signed up to the garden waste collection service can still do so by visiting www.westlancs.gov.uk/gardenwaste. Customers who subscribed to the service in 2017/18 will get a free brown bin, or the equivalent number they subscribed for last year, provided they sign up and pay for the same number before 16 July 2018. After this date the cost will be £25 per bin plus the cost of the subscription to have it emptied.
The brown bins are being introduced so the green bins previously used for garden waste can now be used by residents to recycle cardboard and paper, replacing the blue bag system. This will make the system easier for residents and help the environment as materials will be recycled in larger quantities as well as keeping our streets cleaner and helping to make collection rounds more efficient.
We are also continuing to deliver green bins for cardboard and paper to those residents who have requested one as they didn't have one for garden waste.
Residents who are using blue bags for cardboard and paper and don't have a green bin and haven't ordered one need to do so before 16 July 2018 to receive it free of charge. The Council is aware that a number of residents are using blue boxes for recycling cardboard and paper. If you are using a blue box for paper and cardboard you need to order a green bin at www.westlancs.gov.uk/refuse to ensure that you have the correct container. From 16 July 2018 residents will have to pay £25 for a green bin.
The Council is also starting to recover any green bins, previously used for garden waste that residents do not need. Green bins should be left visible and in an accessible location to enable us to collect them over the coming weeks.
Many residents have welcomed the idea of having a bin for cardboard and paper recycling to replace the blue bag. Residents will have more capacity to store cardboard and paper preventing them from having to take it to a recycling centre.
It also means that this waste will be better contained so it will not end up blowing around the streets, increasing costs to the Council and the Council Taxpayer when the street cleansing teams need to be deployed to clear it up.'
