He might look cute - but the Andrex puppy was partly to blame for a mega sewer blockage in Ormskirk last week which saw engineers working late into the night on Thursday and Friday.

United Utilities brought in specialist contractors to jet the drains along County Road after complaints dirty water was fouling the Hurlston Brook.

Investigations discovered that a mixture of congealed fat, half dissolved baby and toilet wipes - among other nasties - was blocking the main sewer with Sapphire contractors of Walton le Dale working into the early hours and on Saturday morning to jet loose and then suck up the filthy mess and ensure normal service was resumed asap.

UU staff were also spotted on the forecourt of Toby Inns dealing with the problem on Thursday evening.

A UU PR officer told QLocal: "The work that’s been going on was to break up and clear a large ‘fatberg’ which filled the sewer pipe and inspection chambers beneath County Road. This work is ongoing.

"We suspect a build-up of fats, oils and greases are to blame; you will know that these should not be poured down kitchen sinks.

"Regrettably, because the sewer was blocked, some foul water escaped into Hurlston Brook, and this has been cleared up."
