An autism charity is celebrating after receiving a funding boost from the Co-op.
Co-op’s food store in Ormskirk raised over £600 for the charity, through hamper raffles, in-store activities and fancy dress.
Across the region, some 180 Co-op food stores took part in the fundraising bid for Space4Autism to support the parent-led charity’s support and services for families with Autism, and its work to raise awareness of Autism and Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) in communities.
Money was raised for the charity throughout summer with events including: cake and bake sales, hamper raffles, fancy dress and sponsored walks, with a total of £40,000 presented to the charity by the Co-op to support its work.
The funds will enable the charity to run its clubs and events for all ages, including: its Open Space sessions with access to professional advice and guidance; S4A football club; parent/carer get togethers; youth groups and, social skills workshops – all in a safe and enjoyable environment.
Cheryl Simpson, CEO and Co-Founder of Space4Autism, said: “We are overwhelmed!
"It's the generosity of volunteers and fundraisers which enables us to provide the care and support for young people and their families. We were thrilled when the Co-op said they would like to work with us, but the amount raised is beyond our wildest dreams. In addition, our partnership with the Co-op has played a key part in raising awareness of Autism and ASC conditions in communities across the North West. The money raised will make a huge difference, and we cannot say ‘thank you’ enough.”
Paul Faulkner, Regional Manager for the Co-op, said: “As a community retailer, the Co-op is committed to connecting communities, bringing people together and making a difference locally. Getting closer to what our Members and customers want, need and care about.
"The whole team has thrown themselves into this fundraising bid, and were moved by the work of Space4Autism. It is amazing what can be achieved when you work together, and I am incredibly proud of the whole team. I would like to say a huge thank you to colleagues, Members and customers - all donations, no matter how small, have added up to make a big difference to children, young people and their families in our area with autism.”
