Burscough Bridge Interchange is to close on Saturday 25 June.

This office, which is operated by Lancashire County Council, provides information and tickets to train travellers.

The decision to close the interchange was taken as part of the county council's budget, which was agreed by Full Council at its meeting in February 2015.

Over the last few months, Lancashire County Council has been involved in discussions with local groups about how the building could potentially be taken over and used in the future. However, no suitable proposal for its longer term future was received.

Passengers will still be able to travel by train to and from Burscough Railway Station, which will continue to operate as usual. However, they will have to buy tickets either on the train, online or from the nearby staffed stations in Ormskirk or Parbold.

Travel information is available from the Traveline website, http://www.traveline-northwest.co.uk/, or call Traveline on 0871 200 22 33. Rail travel information is available at http://www.nationalrail.co.uk, or by calling 03457 48 49 50.

County Councillor Marcus Johnstone, cabinet member for environment, planning and cultural services, said: "The county council faces severe financial challenges as demand for our services continues to rise as our funding from government falls, which means we will have to rely on our useable reserves just to balance the budget over the next two years.

"These exceptional circumstances mean we are having to take difficult decisions such as this, which will have some impact on travellers.

"However, we have to focus on services for the most vulnerable, such as social care for children and the elderly, which can literally be a matter of life and death.

"Whilst we acknowledge that local people will miss this facility, they will still be able to catch trains from the station, buy tickets on the train and get the information they need either by phone or on the internet.

"I understand there are also plans for Northern Rail/Arriva to install an automatic ticket machine on the station."

The county council would welcome any proposals from community groups who want to take over the building once it has closed.
