Speed limits are to be reduced on parts of two main roads in Ormskirk to improve safety.

Lancashire County Council's cabinet has agreed to cut the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph along sections of County Road and High Lane.

The speed limits were reviewed following a number of collisions being recorded along the length of County Road between its junction with the A570 Southport Road and Burscough Road.

To encourage drivers to observe the lower speed limit, changes will also be made to signs, and road markings will be introduced to narrow the available road space.

A report to the cabinet outlined the result of consultations carried out with police, local councillors and the public.

County Councillor Keith Iddon, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: "We always review safety when a number of collisions are recorded in a particular location to see if there's anything we can reasonably do to improve the situation.

"Our review of the speed limits took into account the nature of these roads, and prospective developments, leading to the proposal to reduce the speed limit to 30mph.

"The consultation on this proposal received a lot of support and I'm grateful to everyone who took the time to respond."
