The winners of the twelfth annual Fantastic Book Awards have been chosen by young readers throughout Lancashire.

Pupils aged nine to eleven in 128 schools across the county have read six books from a list of 30, during the autumn and spring terms.

The children voted for their favourite at the end of the spring term and the winners were announced at ceremonies held in five primary schools earlier today:
    The Bolds - Julian Clary
The Dog, Ray - Linda Coggin
    Electrigirl - Jo Cotterill
A Boy Called Christmas - Matt Haig
Pugs of the Frozen North - Philip Reeve & Sarah McIntyre

The main aim of the awards, organised by Lancashire County Council, is to support reading for pleasure and enjoyment by introducing newly-published fiction titles to nine to eleven year-old pupils.

Julie Bell, Lancashire County Council's head of the libraries, museums, culture and registration service, said: "The awards involve thousands of children from primary schools across Lancashire avidly reading and then discussing books during the autumn and spring terms. Then they vote on the books that they like the best at the end of the spring term.

"This is a fun way for us to engage with our children to encourage them to read and help us to maintain the county's high levels of literacy.

"I'm delighted that the Fantastic Book Awards are now enjoying their twelfth successful year, and that more children have been encouraged to discover the pleasure of a good book."

The five primary schools where ceremonies were held are:
    Nateby Primary School, Garstang
St Ignatius Catholic Primary School, Preston
St Oswald's Catholic Primary School, Longton
    Reedley Primary School, Burnley
Wensley Fold CE Primary Academy, Blackburn
