Lancashire County Council is urging drivers to take more care when passing roadworks following a number of vehicle collisions and near-misses for workers.

County Councillor John Fillis, cabinet member for highways and transport, has unveiled a new sign to remind drivers of their responsibilities to those whose job is to repair and upgrade our roads.

The prominent sign, reading "We're improving your road, slow down to protect our workforce" will be used at busy sites where the potential risks are highest.

County Councillor Fillis said: "We do all we reasonably can to protect our highways teams when they're working, but ultimately their safety relies on drivers obeying the speed limits in place, being patient, and staying alert.

"Unfortunately we do have problems with some people going well over the advised speed limit, and at one site alone in recent months there have been 5 near misses and 3 traffic collisions, any of which could have had much more serious consequences.

"People who work on the roads do not deserve to be put at risk, and I hope our new sign serves as a reminder to all drivers to take care when going through roadworks."
