We are always pleased to publicise news from Lol Critchley and Mike Dawson who between them do such a sterling job preserving the unique history of HMS Ringtail.
Received yesterday was this great news concerning the upcoming refurbishment of the popular Bull and Dog pub:
'Hi Roger
I was contacted recently by some local people who informed me that the Bull and Dog pub on Liverpool Road, Burscough was to have a refurbishment in March.
They were concerned that historic links with the former Royal Naval Air Station (HMS Ringtail) may be lost or damaged, in particular the wooden beam that runs through the pub’s interior that has coins on it put there by the Royal Navy personnel during the air station’s operational years. There are also a number of framed old photographs and images relating to the wartime air station.
The Bull and Dog is the last remaining building left with substantial links to HMS Ringtail. It was close to the main entrance and along with the former Red Lion a regular venue for those based at Burscough, and those coins were knocked into the beam as a gesture of good luck.
Back in May 2013, a ceremony was held at the HMS Ringtail monument to commemorate the Battle of the Atlantic’s 70th anniversary. After the ceremony, Royal Navy Reserve Air Branch personnel and others retired to the Bull and Dog and later some of those from the RN Air Branch knocked some more coins into the beam.
After concerns were raised with me and Mike Dawson, I contacted Punch Taverns to clarify what was to happen; here is their reply: "Upon receipt of your query regarding the Bull & Dog, we sent it to our local Property Manager, Nigel Gowland, who is involved with the refurbishment at the pub.
"He has advised that they are aware of the historical importance of the beams and the coins on them and confirms that as such, they will not be removed and will be incorporated into the forthcoming development at site. He has also confirmed that all bric a brac on site when Punch takes possession of the pub will be kept and reframed."
Nigel also telephoned me to reassure me, and I thanked him for his swift and positive response and looked forward to the future preservation of the historic pub.'
