Liverpool Lime Street station is undergoing a major upgrade - its biggest since the 19th Century.

Between Saturday 30 September and Sunday 22 October 2017, there will be significant disruption to Lime Street mainline services, with many terminating at outlying stations including Liverpool South Parkway.

As a result, a large number of passengers from mainline services will travel between Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool City Centre on Merseyrail trains and other routes on the Merseyrail network will be busier than usual. To ensure the city stays open for business, timetable changes will be made across the Merseyrail network to accommodate the extra passengers expected to travel.

Lime Street low level station will be unaffected by the upgrade and Merseyrail’s Wirral line services will continue to run between Wirral and the station.

    Changes to Merseyrail services include:
Southport line services that usually terminate at Hunts Cross will terminate at Liverpool South Parkway.
A rail replacement bus service will run between Hunts Cross and Liverpool South Parkway and an express bus will run directly between Hunts Cross and Moorfields.
There will be minor timetable alterations between Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Central stations.
Ormskirk services will start and terminate at Moorfields station from start of service until approximately 20:00 each day. After 20:00 trains will start and terminate at Liverpool Central.
Kirkby services will start and terminate at Moorfields station from start of service until approximately 20:00 each day. After 20:00 trains will start and terminate at Liverpool Central.
There will be minor timetable alterations on the Southport line. Passengers travelling between Ellesmere Port and Liverpool will have to change trains at Hooton between approximately 07:00 and 20:00 Monday to Saturday.
There will be minor timetable alternations on the Chester line.
Passengers travelling to and from Liverpool will use alternative routes while Lime Street station is being upgraded, meaning the Liverpool South Parkway, Chester, Ormskirk and Kirkby routes are likely to be busier. Six car trains will run when possible increasing the number of seats available, however passengers are advised to leave more time for their journey as the network will be busy.

It doesn't add up, they haven't got their story straight and why can't Kirkby & Ormskirk trains run through to Central?

For that matter - why can't Southport be connected to all the outlying areas including London and Glasgow? Probably it is thought it would not be viable because no one would be able to afford to travel on the trains anyway.

Its quite simple really all the trains that would normally stop at Lime Street will stop at Liverpool South Parkway and so they are running extra trains from Liverpool South Parkway to Central to shuttle the passengers into the City Centre. There would therefore not be enough room for the Ormskirk and Kirby trains.

They are not running extra trains, they are increasing the normal trains to 6 carriages and laying on replacement buses so why curtail the Ormskirk, Kirkby & Ellesmere Port / Chester?
