Liz Savage has been selected again to stand as Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Southport at the next General Election
Standing against one other local candidate and three from further afield, the 44-year-old single mum of two teenagers was convincingly re-selected with an overwhelming vote nearly four times that of her closest competitor.
The West Lancashire Councillor, who lives just outside the constituency border in Tarleton, has stood twice before in Southport. she doubled the Labour vote in 2015 and nearly repeated the feat earlier this year when she recorded Labour's biggest ever vote in the town, pushing the Liberal Democrats back into third place.
Speaking to the Southport Labour Party members who took part in the vote held at the Prince of Wales Hotel in the town centre last night, she said:
"I want to congratulate the other candidates and espeically wish local party member Janet Harrison all the very best when she stands as councillor for Meols Ward in May. This is a fantastic local party and we have come a long way in a short space of time but we can go on step further and together I believe we will."
Telling the meeting that she was "extremely proud" to have been chosen as their candidate once again, she launched a scathing attack on the current government:
"This Tory administration is destroying our NHS and destroying our communities. People are going hungry, homeless and without basic necessities right here in Southport, where even before Universal Credit impacts, local foodbank use has again risen dramatically, by 27% on last year. Southport needs the reinvestment that a Labour government will bring and we have to bring an end to austerity; with an end to those zero-hours contracts and an end to the zero hope generation that is being created."
She also had words of warning for the town's Conservative MP, Damien Moore:
"He is a man with no apparent programme or policy for the town, who simply wants to occupy the seat, representing a party that has no apparent plan for the country or Brexit, who simply want to hold on to power. He's so insecure that he blocks his own constituents from social media when they challenge him and now I've been selected once again he can expect to be challenged a lot more. Our opponents on both sides are too busy trying to pull Sefton down to actually bother trying to build a future for Southport. This town needs the regeneration, reinvestment in local services and the rekindling of hope that only Labour offers."
