Following the fire at Grenfell Tower in London, Rosie Cooper MP has sought assurance from the Borough Council, as a housing landlord, that residents are safe from a similar tragedy.
In the days following the fire, several residents have contacted MP Rosie expressing their concerns due to their properties also having cladding, although it is understood it is not the same as the cladding structure on Grenfell Tower.
In response to these queries, Rosie Cooper MP has contacted the Council’s Housing Director to raise residents’ concerns and seek assurances over the safety of properties in West Lancashire.
In particular Rosie sought confirmation that current fire regulations are up to date and confirm the working order of fire retardant cladding used in properties.
Speaking about the events in London, West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper said:
“What happened in Grenfell Tower is an absolute tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected. People have lost everything and, most tragically, some lost their lives.
“I would also like to add my sincere thanks to our emergency services who continue to risk their lives on a daily basis to save ours. Their work, wherever it is in the country, is vital and it is essential we recognise their service.”
Commenting further on residents’ concerns in West Lancashire, she said: “In reaction to the events at Grenfell Tower, residents on the Fawcett and Fairburn estates area contacted me as they’re worried about the safety of their cladded properties.
“Having spoken directly to the Council’s Housing Director she has assured me the low rise nature of the properties and the nature of the cladding are key differences with Grenfell Tower. I very much welcome Jacqui Sinnott-Lacey’s commitment to make contact with residents to address any concerns.
“An event like this should never be repeated and we must act to ensure it isn't.”
