Lancashire County Council's new Armed Forces & Veterans Champion has been talking about his role ahead of Armed Forces Day.
County Councillor Alf Clempson represents Poulton-le-Fylde. He joined the Army aged 16 and went on to serve for 24 years in the Scots Guards. He attained the rank of Warrant Officer Class 2, before retiring in 2007.
The role of Armed Forces and Veterans Champion was previously held by Darren Clifford.
Alf has maintained strong links with his former regiment. He is the Chairman of the Preston Branch of the Scots Guards Association, which serves the whole of Lancashire.
Speaking ahead of Armed Forces Day, which takes place on Saturday 24 June, he said: "I am looking forward to making a real difference to the veterans and forces community. I aim to work with all agencies to champion veterans and give them the support they deserve.
"I believe, as a society, that we appreciate the contribution of our Armed Forces, but it’s also important to understand that veterans leaving the services may need support.
"Former members of the armed forces are often disciplined, self-motivated and professional people as a result of their military service. I believe they have a great deal to offer potential employers in civilian life.
"I look forward to continuing the county council's work to fulfil the commitment that we made when we signed the Armed Forces Covenant."
The covenant aims to encourage local communities to support the Armed Forces and its personnel in their area; as well as promoting awareness and increase understanding of the issues affecting the Armed Forces among the wider community in Lancashire.
The covenant also aims to enable military personnel and their families to access services and facilities; support resettling or relocating military personnel and their families; and promotes access to suitable employment and training opportunities for those in transition or preparing to leave active service.
