The new Mayor of West Lancashire will be aiming to promote the borough for tourism and businesses during her year in her civic role.

The Mayor, Councillor Liz Savage, aims to achieve that by visiting as many businesses and tourism venues as she can to help raise their profile.

She said: “West Lancashire has many thriving businesses and wonderful places for people to visit including some beautiful parks and countryside areas. While I am Mayor I want to publicise these places to support local companies and show people that West Lancashire is a great place for business and leisure.

“I am also looking forward to meeting wonderful community groups in West Lancashire I have not been to before and seeing their excellent voluntary work.”

Another important challenge for Councillor Savage will be to raise money for her chosen charities which this year are the Neo-Natal Unit at Ormskirk Hospital; the Artz Centre, Birch Green; The Civic (formerly Ormskirk Civic Hall) and the Birchwood Centre, Skelmersdale. She is already planning fundraising events and more details will be available soon.

At the age of 42, Councillor Savage will become West Lancashire’s youngest Mayor, beating the previous record of Councillor Paul Greenall who was 45 when he took on the Mayoral role in 2012.

Liz Carey, as she was then, grew up in Ormskirk and was a pupil at St. Anne’s Catholic Primary School and St Bede’s Catholic High School.

She has been a councillor for Ashurst since 2011 but first stood for election to the West Lancashire authority in 1995 when she was a candidate for Aughton.

After finishing her degree at Bradford University Liz went to live and work in Hertsmere in Hertfordshire and served on Hertsmere Council between 1996 and 1999. She left the authority to have her first child Charlotte, who is now 17 followed later by her son Ben, aged 14.

Charlotte will act as her mum’s Mayoress on some occasions, but her main consort will be Councillor Noel Delaney. Her chaplain during her Mayoral year will be Fr Godric Timney from St. Anne’s RC Church in Ormskirk.

Councillor Savage came back to live in West Lancashire in 2010 and now works as a dietary consultant. Having been elected to the Council in 2011 she has served in a number of roles including being shadow Finance Portfolio Holder between 2012 and 2014. She served as Deputy Mayor for 2015/16.

Councillor Neil Furey is the new deputy Mayor. He has been a councillor for Skelmersdale North since 2008 and has served as shadow portfolio holder for Housing.
