Congratulations to Burscough’s Danny Hunter - 100 today!
Danny, from School Lane, has lived all his life in the village and best known from Hunter’s corner shop on Lord Street which he ran from the 1930's to c.1970.
During WW2, brave Danny served from July 1940 - December 1945, and while with the 144th Regiment Royal Armoured Corps drove a Sherman tank.
He recalls when during heavy fighting he had a German Tiger tank in its sights; the call from the tank Commander of ‘AIM... FIRE..’ was repeated three times but due to a broken firing pin to no avail - and soon the Tiger tank had them in its sights!
All he remembers is a direct hit; he was blown from the tank, and two comrades were killed; that day the 144th were almost wiped out and he was one of the few survivors!
Danny is pictured with the congratulatory telegram he received today from HM The Queen.
