Tesco shoppers watched in horror as a pensioner lost control of his car and sped off the Burscough Bridge store car park, smashing into a tree.
His Vauxhall Corsa was a write off in the incident which saw the man and his wife taken to Southport Hospital for treatment after the drama this lunchtime.
One eyewitness described how the car clipped a van before racing over the road to smash into the tree near The Grove community centre.
An ambulance crew were first on the scene; the fire service arrived soon after to cut the top off the car and police arrived to take witness statements.
It's believed the man had a recent operation to his foot and had been complaining about difficulty in driving his car.
"I'm so glad there was no one walking along the pavement opposite," said one eye witness.
"It could have been much, much worse."
