Hundreds of school children enjoyed Chinese New Year at Edge Hill University thanks to a brilliant display of Chinese craft, skill and hospitality by its Confucius Institute welcoming 'The Year of the Rooster'.

Thursday morning saw students hold the fourth "Chinese Street Market" and traditional Lion dance greeting the New Year.

Pro Vice-Chancellor Mark Allanson cut the ribbon to open the event that saw pupils from 10 schools across west Lancashire and beyond join University staff and students with nearly 1000 people celebrating the occasion.

The Hub was transformed into a Chinese Street Market, where 12 stalls were themed as a Chinese national costume show, along with calligraphy, the famous tea ceremony, a Chinese musical show, Zodiac, Chinese games, Chinese snacks, paper cutting, origami, Chinese painting, and table tennis (ping pong).

Confucius students at Edge Hill dressed in 56 ethnic costumes of China on the stalls which introduced and showcased Chinese culture to visitors.

The climax of the celebration was the performance made by the art troupe from Harbin Normal University, China; performers demonstrated their amazing strength and skills - the show’s brilliance won the audience with great applause!

Students and friends later enjoyed a delicious Chinese meal on Thursday night in the Arts Centre.
