Age UK Lancashire got into the Christmas spirit on Friday, hosting a brilliant 'Christmas nostalgia' afternoon at its Ormskirk Wellbeing Centre.
It was aimed at people living with dementia and their families, allowing them to enjoy an afternoon of festive activities in a safe, welcoming environment.
Funded by the County Council's 'Community Wellbeing' fund, the afternoon was well supported by local organisations that supplied raffle prizes to support the charity's fundraising campaign 'No one should have no one' highlighting the negative impact loneliness has on people’s health and wellbeing, and how organisations like Age UK Lancashire can help people to remain connected to their community and provide wider support to benefit them.
Abigail Ellis from the charity's Dementia Community Links Team said; “We were delighted to be able to put on this event in Ormskirk.
"We have a really strong community in this area and our Wellbeing Centre is the ideal place for this kind of event.
"The turnout was really good and we even had to bring out more chairs and tables for people.”
Agencies attending to support included West Lancs Carers Support, Home Instead, Alzheimer’s Society and the Lancashire Wellbeing Service - all there to offer information on their services and how people can benefit from them.
Mince pies and homemade Christmas cake were enjoyed by everyone as well as a raffle with some great prizes including vouchers for the Hop Vine and a festive hamper, helping to raise £125 for the charity.
Added Abigail: “The atmosphere was really good and it was so special to see people enjoying a party with their loved ones whose lives are really stressful and difficult.
"We held a themed quiz as well as having a reminiscence table and memory tree.
"Many people with dementia keep their long terms memory so these activities are really special and allow people to remember growing up, which makes them happy”.
The event was finished off with carol singing and keyboard playing which was a real highlight, topping the day off in a very festive way.
Age UK Lancashire would like to thank Lancashire County Council for the funding and all the partners and visitors who came along to enjoy the event.
The Wellbeing Centre is situated on Moorgate in Ormskirk and offers opportunities for activities and support to anyone over 50. People can call in during the week or call 0300 303 1234 to find out more about the centre and what support they can receive.
