Lancashire Amateur Shield Final County ground Leyland Friday 21st April

    Burscough Richmond 1. Blackpool Wren Rovers 1 (5 – 4 after penalties)

It was third time lucky for Burscough Richmond in the Lancashire Amateur Shield Final on Friday evening!

But it took six penalties and a goal in normal time plus some magnificent goalkeeping from man of the match Ben Barnes before the West Lancashire division one side deservedly lifted the Light Distribution Ltd. Shied at the County ground in Leyland.

Richmond went into this match as real underdogs, but knowing that a run of ten unbeaten games had their confidence on a high.
Having twice been losing finalist in this competition in 94/95 and 03/04 the Burscough side were determined to give a good account of themselves.

With the pitch in pristine condition on a cool and dry evening both sides emerged from the dressing rooms; it was a moment of great pride for the Richmond management team and a fantastic achievement for a side lacking in numbers at the beginning of the season.

After the customary handshakes before the start of the game, referee Mr. Adam Brown blew his whistle and Blackpool Wren Rovers commenced the match.

After some initial trepidation before the game, it became obvious after twenty minutes that Richmond were holding their own against Rovers, the nippy Richmond strikers of Nathan Martland and Jack Golding keeping the Blackpool defenders on their toes.

Good play created by the Richmond midfielders of Tom Corrigan, Ryan Giller and Chris Jones, the midfield play setting up Jack Golding for three glorious chances, one shot striking the woodwork, with an earlier chance being wasted when one on one with the Wrens goalkeeper Alex Cameron on 33 minutes.

At the other end of the pitch, Richmond were being placed under severe pressure by a set of Blackpool forwards who’ve amassed 100 plus goals this season – but that total was a complete irrelevance to Richmond keeper Ben Barnes who brought off several classic saves in the first half.

Yet it still wasn't easy for the Richmond defensive rearguard of Ash Disley, Lee Morton, Saul Guffogg and captain Lee McNabb, the back line having to be re shuffled due to the absence of the influential centre back Scott Taylor and an injury to left back John Anderson.

Ash Disley was in outstanding form for the evening, the central defender making a perfect last ditch challenge in a very dangerous position as one of the Blackpool strikers was about to pull the trigger.
Lee McNabb created some consternation when under pressure from the Rovers forwards, the stand in left full back mysteriously lifted the ball onto his own crossbar, fortunately cleared eventually.

Richmond goalkeeper Ben Barnes was having a busy first half, which we all expected, and two notable saves kept Wrens at bay with the Blackpool side asserting considerable pressure later in the first half.

Richmond weathered the perfect first half storm and came through unscathed with a credible performance as referee Mr. Brown blew the whistle for half time.

Richmond began the second half with Wrens in determined mood to make a break through, and once again it was keeper Barnes, making two fantastic saves, who was their saviour.

The Blackpool side got the goal they were seeking on 58 minutes, a shot from number 10 Danny Morris taking a wicked deflection off a Richmond player and beating Barnes for the first time in the match.
Richmond to their credit did not let their heads drop and made a substitution, Jimmy Hanson for Tommy Corrigan, with later changes, Mario Kramny for Chris Jones and Anthony Murt for Lee McNabb.

Those substitutions had the desired effect, when on the 70 minute mark, Hanson's trickery just outside the penalty area gave the winger just enough space to feed a pass to the influential Nathan Martland.
He collected the ball a yard inside the penalty area, but was impeded as he turned, went down, referee Brown having no hesitation, pointing to the spot, to the elation of the Richmond crowd.

Was this the luck the division one side needed?

We all looked on with complete apprehension, as the striker retrieved the ball and placed it on the spot, but needn't have worried as the well placed penalty beat the Wrens keeper Alex. Cameron and nestled in the back of the net.

The crowd went ballistic, was this Richmond's chance?

Minutes later buoyed by the goal, it was Martland again who set up Ryan Giller who fired high from a good position.

As the 90 minutes loomed, it was that man Barnes again who pulled off another brilliant save, the Blackpool side going for a last push to win the game in normal time and avoiding the lottery of a penalty shoot out, but Richmond held on as referee Brown blew for full time.

That said, Richmond didn't just ‘hold on’ but played with composure and determination against a very good side from the West Lancashire premier league, the appreciative crowd cheering and clapping at the Burscough sides 90 minute heroics.

Now it was ‘squeaky bum time’ as United manager Alex. Ferguson was prone to say.

Five penalties each as it was in the semi final at Skelmersdale – that night Richmond achieved the perfect 5.

Richmond’s Jimmy Hanson's left foot accuracy found the back of the net, while Richmond keeper Barnes flung his arm and hand at the ball to deflect the shot over the bar, to a big cheer from players and spectators.

The good news continued as striker Nathan Martland drove the ball into the net, striker Jack Golding also fired past keeper Cameron, Ryan Giller didn’t miss (just), but then Anthony Murt fired penalty five over making it 4 - 4. Penalty six saw Mario Kranmy step up and cool as cucumber drive the ball into the back of the net.

The final kick to Blackpool Wren Rovers to even the score once again; ‘cometh the moment, cometh the man’, and 6ft 5" Richmond keeper Barnes dived the right way to stop the penalty.

Cue unbelievable scenes around the ground: the big man had done it for Richmond and gained the ‘Man of the match’ award for his majestic performance.

The Shield was presented to Richmond with rapturous applause from the jubilant onlookers as captain Lee McNabb lifted the trophy high.

And architect of this season's superb cup run, manager Mike Clandon who was unable to attend, is a happy person.

Well played both teams and congratulations Burscough Richmond the Lancashire Amateur Shield champions!
