£64 million government funding to encourage more cycling and walking to work

Local transport funding to help people walk or cycle safely to work.
Thousands more people will be encouraged to cycle and walk to work thanks to a £64 million government investment, Transport Minister Andrew Jones announced yesterday (26 January 2017).

The funding will support local projects over 3 years from 2017 to 2020 and form part of a wider government package of more than £300 million to boost walking and cycling during the current parliament. By 2040 the government aims to make this part of everyday life and walking and cycling the natural choice for shorter journeys.
    The money will deliver:

    • more safety and awareness training for cyclists
    • extra secure cycle storage
    • bike repair and maintenance courses
    • road safety measures
    • mapping information for pedestrians
    • real time bus information through smart phone apps or information at bus stops
    • increased focus on car sharing clubs

The funding will also target those looking to get back into work because access to transport and the cost of travel often restricts where people can look for work and their ability to attend interviews. They will also benefit from discount bus travel and bike loans.
    Transport Minister Andrew Jones said:
We are committed to improving how people travel and this investment will ensure that people’s journeys are cheaper, safer and better for the environment. It will help people to become more active and better transport planning will reduce congestion on our roads – particularly at peak times.
This investment will also help people access jobs, education and training - specifically targeting those looking to get back into work, as part of our relentless drive to make this is a country that works for everyone.
    The funding could lead to:

    • 95 million fewer miles in car journeys
    • 99,000 extra walking trips per day
    • 40,000 extra cycling trips per day

Stephen Joseph, Chief Executive, Campaign for Better Transport said:
We strongly welcome this announcement of the access fund projects and the new cycling and walking to work fund. The evidence suggests that these kinds of projects can remove barriers to work, help local communities and businesses and also tackle local transport problems by giving people attractive alternatives to car use. We look forward to working with the government, the authorities involved, and other organisations to develop and learn from these projects.
All English transport authorities (outside London) were invited to bid for the funding. The following 25 successful local authority bidders will each receive a share of the £60 million Sustainable Travel Access Fund for 2017 to 2020:

How can this money encourage people to cycle?

If folk WANT to cycle they will..... if they DON'T WANT to cycle..... money spent on publicity will NOT make a difference................. nor make them change their minds!

If they think I am going to walk the 64 mile round trip to work they can go and get stuffed. 40 years ago I could have biked it 1.5 hours each way (eat your heart out cycling queen) but the body is worn out now so I'll drive thanks!

Come now, if you can't walk or cycle then you should be using our "great public transport system", doesn't matter that it costs a fortune and will probably take 5 times longer to get to work, plus of course if you work outside the "normal" hours there won't be any public transport anyway.

It will take a hell of a lot more than a bit of propaganda to achieve this pipe dream.

Presumably the billions that companies spend on advertising products is also wasted....

Firstly I wonder how the funding has been divvied up , why ( for instance ) has Sheffield City Region been awarded £7M for this initiative but Liverpool City Region will only receive £0.77M .There is wide variation which at first sight looks unfair.

However the main issue around cycling is surely safety .There are over 3K cyclists who suffer serious accidents in the UK yearly , over 100 of these fatal. The vast majority of cycle accidents predictably occur in urban areas which will continue to deter folk from saddle travel. In my view , if we want to get more people to take more journeys by bike we need many more cycle-only lanes in our cities and towns instead of expecting cyclists to take their life in hands as at present ( or succumb to temptation to ride on pavements ! surely not ) . That's where the funding should be focussed , not preaching the virtues of life-changing ; most of us agree with all that!

Presumably the regions have had to apply for grants and Sheffield made a better bid than Liverpool.

The amount of cyclists who choose not to use Benthans way cycle lane amazes me. I think this may be due to the lack of upkeep of the cycle lane.I am all for people cycling ,but they need to obey the rules of the road.

Maybe they should fine cyclists who don't use cycle tracks when they are provided and use this money to fund cycle tracks in areas that need em
