Drivers parking inappropriately around Preston City Centre have been warned that they could be issued with a £70 penalty charge notice, after more than thirty were issued on Sunday 11 August.

Enforcement has already been stepped up around the city centre, to coincide with the latest stage of work on the city centre improvements. Signs showing the parking restrictions are in place.

Parking on the pavements is prohibited and subject to a £70 penalty charge notice.

There are clearly labelled loading bays for vehicles delivering to businesses, but these should not be used for private vehicles, and should only be used while loading/unloading is taking place.

Enforcement took place on Sunday, 11 August, between 9:20am and 1:50pm, with over 30 PCNs being issued within the city centre.

John Fillis, Cabinet member for highways and transport for Lancashire County Council explained: "It's important that people always park their vehicles responsibly. During this work there have been times where people have parked inconsiderately, especially on the pavement.

"This blocks pathways for people shopping, working and getting around the city centre and causes particular problems for people with a visual impairment. It can also damage the paving, which would mean costly bills if we had to replace it.

"We’re delighted that this latest stage of work has been completed, which has given a new-look to this area of the city, but we want to make sure that it's kept in good condition for everyone to enjoy and benefit from.

"There is a lot of investment in the city centre and it is no surprise that more people will want to come and spend time here. There are many great car parks around the city centre, as well as the park and rides, so I would urge visitors to use these instead of the new pavements."

The improvements to the city centre are a key part of the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal. This is an agreement between Lancashire Enterprise Partnership and Preston City Council, South Ribble Borough Council and Lancashire County Council, along with central government and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

The City Deal will help to create more than 20,000 new private sector jobs and see over 17,000 new homes built across Preston and South Ribble, as well as new school places, open green spaces and new health provision to cater for the growing population.
