Primary school pupils in South Ribble have been learning about languages and improving their understanding of different cultures.

Hosted at St Anne's school in Leyland, children from local schools were investigating and tasting healthy foods from around the world, performing poetry in Romany, listening to bilingual stories and writing with different alphabets from different languages.

The pupils also got the chance to try traditional English Morris Dancing.

Children and staff from Leyland St Annes primary, Woodlea Primary, Moss Side Primary, Seven Stars Primary, and the Ethnic Minority Gypsy Roma Traveller Service took part in the event.

The day was organised by Lancashire County Council, working closely with the schools.

Roxana Sardais from the county council said: "By increasing pupils' knowledge of other countries and cultures, we can help them to see the similarities between different people, as well as appreciating the differences between cultures. Learning other peoples' languages is a way of helping us to communicate with each other."

Elizabeth Darnell, Headteacher from Leyland St Anne's, said: "The day was very well organised with a variety of activities that the children thoroughly enjoyed. Experiences like this really do have a positive impact on the children, shaping their views and understanding of others who share their world.”
