The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 1 June but could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible. Drivers looking for roadworks information (such as overnight carriageway closures) for individual schemes should now visit www.trafficengland.com. Some of our larger schemes have project pages giving other information. These can now be accessed from a dedicated regional page: http://roads.highways.gov.uk/north-west

    M53 junction 1 to junction 2 resurfacing

A 3 week project to resurface both the southbound and northbound carriageways started on Tuesday (29 May) with Monday to Friday overnight – 8pm to 5am – work. This will include replacement of bridge expansion joints and renewal of road markings. Full overnight closures of 1 of the 2 carriageways will be needed at times during the work.

    M53 Junction 3

A maintenance project to repair the 2 bridges over the motorway at junction 3 is continuing with narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit. Sections of the roundabout will be closed overnight occasionally to resurface and re-waterproof the bridge decks. We’re adding extra protection to bridge supports and the scheme is now due to be completed in July.

M53 to M56 link road, Stoak Interchange

Overnight – 8pm to 5am – work to resurface the link road from the southbound M53 onto the eastbound M56 started on Monday 21 May for 3 weeks – mainly between Monday and Friday. The link road will be closed when work is taking place with clearly-signed diversions in place. The northbound link road from the M53 onto the eastbound M56 will also benefit from resurfacing at a future date

    M55 eastbound resurfacing

A £1.5 million project to totally resurface the eastbound carriageway between junction 4 at Blackpool and junction 1 at Broughton is underway. Phase 2 – between junction 3 and junction 1 – will start on Monday (4 June) and involves 8pm to 6am overnight closures of the carriageway with clearly-signed diversions in place. The work is due to be completed by the end of the month.

    M56 Junctions 1 to 4 Sharston Link

Work to upgrade the safety barriers and improve drainage on the M56 started in March. Temporary narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit will be in place during the project and some overnight lane and carriageway closures will also be needed. The scheme is due to be finished in the autumn.

    M57/M58 Switch Island

Construction work is taking place on a £3 million scheme to improve journeys and safety at Switch Island. All of the work will take place overnight to minimise disruption to drivers and the scheme is due to be completed by the end of winter 2018/19.

M6 Junctions 16 to 19 (Cheshire smart motorway)

Work is underway to upgrade the M6 to a smart motorway between Crewe and Knutsford, converting the hard shoulder to an extra lane and introducing new variable speed limits. Narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit are in place for the safety of drivers and workers. The scheme is due to be completed in spring 2019.

    M6 Junction 19 Knutsford

Occasional work – such as ground investigations – is taking place as part of plans for a major improvement of the roundabout and junction. This requires occasional overnight lane and slip road closures.

    M6 Junction 20 (Swineyard Lane)

Maintenance and repair work is taking place to the bridge which carries Swineyard Lane over the M6 at junction 20 near Sworton Heath, south of Lymm. Hard shoulder closures, narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit will be in place in both directions to ensure the maintenance scheme can be delivered safely. The scheme is due to be finished in early 2019.

    M6 Junctions 26 to 27 (Gathurst Viaduct)

The bridge decks at Gathurst Viaduct are being re-waterproofed and resurfaced in overnight work that will resume on Monday (4 June). A month of work along the northbound carriageway will complete phase 1 of the project. Work will then move onto the southbound carriageway for 2 weeks in July before a final 2 weeks of finishing works along both carriageways to complete the project. Most of the work will take place between 9pm and 6am. Some overnight closures of both carriageways will be needed during each phase of the work with clearly-signed diversions in place. A 40mph speed limit and narrow lanes through a contraflow system will be in place at all times.

    M6 Junctions 26 to 28

Resurfacing work on the northbound carriageway is being carried out between 8pm and 5am, Monday to Friday, with lane closures and a temporary 50mph speed limit in place. The scheme also includes repainting road markings and drainage improvements. Some slip road closures will also be needed with diversions in place. The project is due to be finished early this month.

M6 northbound junction 35 to Burton Services

In a 3 week scheme of overnight work which started on Monday 14 May we’re resurfacing the northbound M6 between junction 35 at Carnforth and Burton services. We’ll also be replacing the expansion joints on the Keer and Elpha bridges. The work requires a mixture of overnight – 8pm to 6am – lane and carriageway closures. The entry slip road onto the northbound M6 at junction 35 will also be closed nightly between 8pm and 6am from Friday 1 to Friday 8 June.

M60 junction 8 to M62 junction 20 (Sale to Rochdale)

A major smart motorway scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures, with narrow lanes and a temporary 50mph speed limit in place for the safety of drivers and road workers. Overnight closures will take place between 10pm and 6am, and drivers will be able to follow clearly-signed diversion routes. The following overnight closures will be in place next week:

    Monday 4 to Friday 8 June – M60 anticlockwise (junctions 12 to 8), M60 clockwise (junctions 15 to 17) and M62 westbound (junctions 20 to 18)
    Saturday 9 June – M60 anticlockwise (junctions 15 to 12) and M60 clockwise (junctions 17 to 18)
    Sunday 10 June – M60 clockwise (junctions 8 to 12) and M60 anticlockwise (junctions 15 to 12)

    M66 Junctions 1 to 2 (Bury)

A project is taking place to deliver resurfacing, new drainage and new safety barriers along the northbound carriageway. All the work is taking place overnight – between 8pm and 5am – from Monday to Friday only. There will be nightly closures of the northbound carriageway for around 2 months. A clearly-signed diversion will be in place using the A58 and A56.

M67 Denton Island to junction 3

A project is underway to replace the safety barriers in the verges and central reservation, between the start of the M67 at Denton Island Interchange (with junction 24 of the M60) and junction 3. All the work will be done overnight between 8pm and 5am, Monday to Friday. Lane closures will be needed frequently as well as occasional slip road closures, with clearly-signed diversions in place. The scheme is due to be completed by the end of June.

    A590 Pigwilly Wood to M6

We’re reconstructing the eastbound carriageway between the bridge over the River Kent and the county show ground. A contraflow arrangement will be in place to allow eastbound drivers to use a lane of the westbound dual carriageway. The work is expected to be completed by the end of June.

A595 Inkerman Terrace and Hillcrest Avenue junctions

We’re resurfacing the road here in both directions in a 4 week project that started on Tuesday 8 May. We are also renewing the road markings and studs. Traffic management will be in place between 7pm and midnight each evening with temporary traffic lights and some 10mph convoy working.

    A66 Dacre and Hutton junctions

A 10 week project to resurface the westbound carriageway along this dual carriageway section of the A66 started on Monday 14 May. Initial work using 24 lane closures on both the eastbound and westbound carriageways will be taking place to install a contraflow arrangement to allow drivers to use a lane of the eastbound carriageway. The westbound carriageway will then close to allow the resurfacing, construction of new gullies and kerbs, to take place.
