Road users are being advised that two lanes are closed on the southbound M6 between junction 19 (for Knutsford) and junction 18 (for Holmes Chapel) in Cheshire.

The outside two lanes remain closed following a collision between a car and a lorry that has resulted in the lorry shedding its load of concrete blocks onto the carriageway.

Highways England is working hard with the North West Motorway Group to reopen the lanes as soon as it is safe to do so.

Removing the concrete blocks requires a specialist crane, which will take some time. Work to move the concrete blocks is underway with the aim of reopening a second lane while further recovery work takes place in the outside lane.

Drivers are being advised to plan their journeys and allow additional time. At 8am, delays of over 90 minutes are being recorded on the southbound M6.

Drivers heading off for their Easter holidays are being urged before they set off to:

check fuel: make sure you have enough to get to your destination
check tyres: before setting off on a long/significant journey, check your tyre pressure and the condition of your tyres, including the spare; look out for cuts or wear and make sure the tyres have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm, which is the legal limit
check engine oil: use your dipstick to check oil before any long journey, and top up if needed; take your car back to the garage if you’re topping up more than usual
check water: to ensure you have good visibility, always keep your screenwash topped up so you can clear debris or dirt off your windscreen
check your lights: If your indicators, hazard lights, headlights, fog lights, reverse lights or brake lights are not functioning properly, you are putting yourself at risk; in addition, light malfunctions can be a reason for your vehicle to fail its MOT
