Merseyrail passengers will once again have to endure industrial action, as the RMT announces it will stage further strikes on 3rd and 5th of October, which coincides with the first phase of work to transform Liverpool Lime Street mainline station by the end of 2018.

Between 30 September and 22 October, Network Rail will embark on a major project to overhaul the station, helping cater for a predicted doubling of peak-time passengers by 2043. The city will remain open for business throughout the work.

No trains will enter or leave Lime Street mainline station for nine days, and many will be diverted to Liverpool South Parkway. Merseyrail will play a key role in transporting passengers, plenty from outside the local area, between that station and the centre of Liverpool.

Over the next seven days, the amended timetable in relation to the strike, as well as details about alternative travel arrangements, will be published, with the best interests of the city region prioritised.

Jan Chaudhry-van der Velde, Merseyrail’s managing director, said:

“We are busy trying to build a better city region with an improved railway. The RMT seem to be doing everything in their power to destroy this work. Don’t they want Liverpool to succeed?”
