Sefton Council are planning cuts of almost £750,000 to the budget for The Atkinson and Tourism in Southport.
The Atkinson will have £414,000 taken away and Tourism will see £335,000 disappear.
The cuts are outlined in a document prepared for the Cabinet meeting on Thursday 12th January at Southport Town Hall.
Olocal has asked for comments from local Councillors about this matter.
The full document can be read here

As the Atkinson is a leisure facility why close it on a Sunday?
I appreciate Sunday is somewhat special for many reasons (including the cost of opening it) but surely Sunday is one of the days where you might attract visitors

Well having read the document shown 6 of the 9 proposed changes are actually increases in income rather than cuts.

Agreed, they should be looking at longer opening hours for a building that generates revenue.
Same with Dunes/Splashworld, they close it between Xmas and new year when the kids are off and want to use it.

Moronic to shut the Atkinson on a Sunday when there is the opportunity for daytime as well as evening events. (Monday would be a much better option). Seems like typical Council think.

The management of The Atkinson is not commercially minded enough. Closing for two weeks over the Christmas period is ludicrous given that that is exactly when people want to go out. Sefton have consistently refused to treat The Atkinson as an exemption to their policy of enforcing unpaid leave to employees. Why is the bar not open on a regular basis? It could be a great afternoon and evening venue.
Sooner or later Sefton will say they have to close The Atkinson because it doesn't make enough money!

Yep, a group of 8 of us had a evening/get together a few weeks ago, and on moving from one drinking venue to another (for a change) we passed the Atkinson, foyer was full, bar was shut!
