What a simple minded hypocritical prick.

Lord Street wasn't red tarmac in Victorian times so citing Victorian heritage is misleading.
How is the council responsible for empty shops? It's more due to the fact that his government's policies mean people have little disposable income to spend.
How can a Labour council invest in Southport when his Conservative party have cut the council's funding by 50%?
How much does he think the council made from the privately run Open and Flower Show?
Did he even pay for his own tickets to those events?

In Victorian Times Lord Street was neither red nor black - it was laid with sandy coloured paving!
The shops that are empty in Southport are because the business rates have remained high while the footfall has reduced considerably. The rates should reflect the potential profits according to the number of actual shoppers. Southport should receive priority investment promoting it as a Victorian Resort, since it is a natural tourist attraction and would benefit Sefton in general, whereas investment into areas such as Bootle is dead money.
Of course there was profits from the events in Southport - they would not take place if there wasn't. I am sure that the council would not have provided parking arrangements, community guides, traffic control with additional policing out of the goodness of their hearts!

But that would require the government to alter the structure of business rates nationally. Perhaps our MP should be lobbying his lords and masters instead?

Exactly how appealing is Victoriana to anyone under 60? By all means preserve and celebrate Victorian heritage but visitors want modern attractions.

I'm not saying there wasn't any profit for the council. But how much?

I think it may well be you that is the prick, I have lived in Southport Lancashire all my life ( over 65 years ) and for as long as I can remember Lord St has always been a red road and should always be red and I for one would be happy to pay extra on my council tax to keep it red but it wont happed all our money goes to Liverpool and not a lot comes back to Southport

So obviously it's impossible for you to remember Victorian times and i'm pretty sure that Liverpool's funding is entirely separate from Sefton.

Liverpool is not part of Sefton Council. I'd suspect not many folks would care to have their council tax increased. Nor should they. The simple fact is if Lib-Dems and Tories had not cut Sefton's budget by over £200m, so far, then you'd have your red road, so a simple lesson... vote Labour next time.

...because we all know that everything is free for everyone under the socialists (just like in Venezuela, where you can actually starve for free with Jeremy's friends).

    Vote Labour???

People have got short memories about when Labour were in power and attempted to run this country.
Truth is, doesn't matter whose in Downing Street, you'll get shafted.....
If the road outside Bootle Town Hall was red tarmac, I'll guarantee they'd find the money to keep it red...

It was Labour's last term in office with their spend spend mentality that resulted in austerity measures coming in. And before you shoot me down, I remember it clearly because it led to me being made redundant.

Are you saying that unless there's still somebody alive from an historic period, we shouldn't preserve and restore our heritage? Pretty sure there are no original occupants of ancient Rome or Greece, but thank god there are people who conserve it for future generations. I can't believe some of the small minded comments on here, particularly the one about anyone under 60 yrs old not giving a damn whether Southport Victorian theme is restored. Primary school children as part of the curriculum study the architecture of this town and they love it!

No, I haven't said that at all. In fact I said "by all means preserve and celebrate Victorian heritage"

The point I was making was that just because someone can only ever remember it being red doesn't mean it has always been red. And it hasn't always been red.

I've read this thread several times and cannot see that anyone has said that.

    Here's Victorian Lord Street for you;

Definitely not red. But if Victorian is the only theme the town is allowed then when are the trams coming back and when is the war memorial being demolished?

Perhaps people should just accept that with half the funding they can't have everything they've previously had. These are the policies of a government that the people of Southport have helped to elect. No point some wet behind the ears back bench MP writing pathetic letters about it when it's what his lords and masters have determined. Perhaps when this government's "long term economic plan" has come to fruition funds may allow the black tarmac to be replaced with red.

No it's not free but it's not unreasonable to expect all of the tax one pays to be spent on the provision of public services rather than creamed off in profits by private industry.

You stated "Exactly how appealing is Victoriana to anyone under 60? By all means preserve and celebrate Victorian heritage but visitors want modern attractions."

As I pointed out, Victoriana is appealing and is taught to local primary school children!

I think Mr Brightside, that at the end of the day, you confirm why Southport being in Sefton will never work. I don't know where in the borough you live, but your views on my home town are biased and driven by your overwhelming 'love' of the Labour party. People in this town voted Conservative because they were tired of the Lib Dems and disillusioned by a Labour run council who does not listen fairly to our voice. This shouldn't be an issue driven by politics, it should be about common sense and good business. Southport generates ALOT of revenue for Sefton and should therefore be wisely promoted as a Victorian resort.
