Merseyside Police is appealing for witnesses following a robbery in Southport last night (Saturday, 9 September).
Emergency services were called to Hawkshead Street at around 9.35pm to a report four people had assaulted a 49-year-old man by punching and kicking him before throwing an unknown substance in his face.
The youths, described as three males and a female aged 17-19, then left on foot taking his mobile phone and wallet.
Police attended and administered first aid to the victim before he was taken to hospital to be treated for burns to his face and eyes. His condition is described as stable.
An investigation into the incident has been launched and officers are conducting forensics and house to house enquiries. CCTV opportunities are also being explored.
Tests will be carried out on the substance thrown at the victim.
Detective Inspector Simon Vaughan said: "This was a shocking and completely unprovoked attack on a man who was simply walking home.
"Violent robberies such as this will not be tolerated by Merseyside Police and I am sure the local community will agree this is completely unacceptable.
"I would like to reassure the community that incidents of this nature are extremely rare and patrols in the area have been increased. We are determined to find the people responsible for this and would appeal to anyone with information to call us."
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0151 777 3823 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
What a vile, cowardly attack! I do hope the man attacked recovers well, my thoughts are with him and his family. Its to be hoped that these scum are caught as soon as possible and severely dealt with. As a small minority of feral youths in Southport have been untouchable for so long, it has always concerned me they would move on to more serious crimes and here we have it.

Teenagers assaulting robbing and possible acid attack. This is so nasty and deserves custodial sentences of severity and maybe some may think again. Odds are they still live at home with parent / parents - where does it go so badly wrong?

It goes completely wrong with the utter lack of discipline, and as far as making it illegal to punish the little angels we are reaping the fruits of the faint hearted PC brigade and their barmy ideology. I hope the 4 worthless ar5eholes suffer a very painful and severe end they thoroughly deserve it.

It seems coincidental that CCT coverage of vandals damaging the pier and property earlier in the year also involved several males and a girl.
perhaps this is the same group.

This is the problem with attacks like this, A couple hit the news, and every want to be hard man copies them.
So some unfortunate person has to be scared possible for life because some little arsehole thinks he's all gangster.

Someone must know who they are! Why can the police not offer a reward for information as they pay informants.
This is scary on our doorsteps, even if they get caught they will get minimal sentences as some excuses will be made for their acts.
What sort of world are we living in!

What sort of world do we live in where we have to be paid to do something we know is right?

This despicable incident has been on national television today. Out of the four cowards one must have mentioned involvement to family or friends, withholding information is a criminal offence, anyone doing so receives the same sentence as the perpetrators. Some of the familys must have seen this on TV and will know who is responsible.
If YOU know tell the Police before they come knocking, as they surely will.
