The speed limit has been reduced on the A565 Tarleton bypass to 50 mph between Banks and Mere Brow and vice versa.
Contractors are also busy installing the cameras along this section of road.
The cameras will use number plate recognition technology to detect vehicles and calculate their average speed by measuring the time taken to travel between fixed points of a known distance apart. Average Speed Check signage will be used to inform drivers that they are entering an average speed control zone.
The introduction of the system is intended to positively influence driver behaviour and ensure that motorists comply with the set limits on roads, resulting in a safer environment for all road users.

Since the Riverside turn off was shut the only black spot is the Crossing at Mere Brow so why the whole bypass has to be 50 is a complete overkill. Maggie May says no VAT rises so I suppose the money has to come from somewhere to keep the taxes down for the Rich.

Be careful, one of the camera vans was on this road at the weekend as soon as the speed limit was dropped.

Great scheme on busy days work through the bottle neck that is the Plough roundabout, hit the open road and get stitched up, another mindless, needless limit for no purpose other than filling the coffers, most if not all accidents on this stretch have been at one particular junction, which surprise, surprise is already a 50mph limit and reduced to single carriageway, to hell with it, bring back the guy with the red flag walking in front of vehicles and I would lay money that some mummet would still pull out or step out into oncoming traffic and claim the traffic was speeding.

Typical Lancs CC!
They have failed to invest in the road infrastructure into Southport from the North and the East and now they're restricting the traffic flow from the North to a pathetic 50mph when there's been no accidents on that stretch of dual-carriageway... sheer left-wing lunacy "again"!
If they cared about "road safety" they shut the access to the dual-carriageway at the accident black-spot at the ridiculous Mere-brow junction. But Oh No, Gatzo's at either end of the accident "nightmare".... Totally agree nothing but a "money making scam" at the expense of the legitimate motorist again!!!
Try catching some of the scum who are uninsured, un-taxed and illegal before "********" on those on the boundary of your own......
Animal Farm to the South and Animal Farm to the North, Souhtport, the land that politics forgot - oh so sorry, it's LibDum, that'll be the reason then.........

That'll be a certain "Muppet" cyclist who will cycle down the dual carriageway at 10mph when there's a perfectly good (and safe) cycle path all along the dual-carrigaeway. If that "ars***le" had to have insurance and risk his no-claims-bonus he wouldn't be any where other than a cycle-path because insurance would be invalid!!

I really do not see the benefit of this on that particular stretch at all. Everyone knows where the accident spot is and it ain't there.
I thought average speed cams were only for when road works.
And yes, cyclists should use the cycle lane, was behind one the other day there

I've no issue with the 50mph limit - I pay for my own petrol, being held at a lower speed means I get a better mpg so win! win! Oh yes and the safety aspect...
However I do feel that the Fun Police have taken much of the enjoyment out of motoring; it takes me around 40 minutes to get to work on the far side of Preston, but 70 minutes to get home - yet it's the same journey! First homeward jam is encountered on the docks, then at Penwortham, and again at Tarleton - traffic was tailed back for about 3 miles from the lights yesterday. Public transport is inadequate for my journey - it takes twice as long and costs twice as much as taking the car.
If LCC want to put speed limits up that's fine - what price safety etc - but at least try to put other measures in place so the traffic can flow better; why not widen the A565/A59 junction at Windgate then one or two vehicles turning right don't hold up dozens of vehicles going straight across? Or how about a filter on the lights? Instead it's stop-start-stop-start all the way home, leading to tired and frustrated motorists - who finally get to an open dual carriageway which...is restricted to 50mph...bug**r!

I understand that once the specs scheme is complete they be will installing static cameras (GATSO) on the stretches of road either end of the specs section of road.

What does anybody expect its Lancashire with its useless councilors and jobsworth plod looking for the easy way to fill up their 'crime quotas'. They cannot do a "proper" police job that involves nasty criminals just the motorist that strays over the over cautious speed limit by the smallest amount then hits them with huge fines oh and three plus points on their licence.
Also remember that the faceless cowardly highways department beuroprats are the ones responsibe for setting these limits - because they can and for no other reason!!
At least Merseyside police and council havn't sunk that low yet - at least they do listen.
